Chain, chain, chain

Seems like a bit of an overreaction by Shaw Heights Middle School in Adams County, Colorado. Maybe a bit of cabin fever, or just an inability to resolve a difference of opinion with an 11-year old...the cops were actually called and cuffed Yarija because she was rude to the principal. Does the school use capital punishment for late library books?

Paid for porn

An arbitrator recently ruled that this pervert gets his job back at Glacier Middle School, plus back pay and benefits estimated at over $200,000. All he did was look at porn at school BEFORE the district enacted a stricter policy...hence...off the hook. So here is the solution if the school district fails in an appeal ( they have already spent over $300,000 on this case)...students should simply refuse to be in his presence. Parents can work to organize these kids and make sure his science classroom stays empty. Then the district can reassign him to...Internet Specialist!

Tag you're it

Kudos to Principal Bill Sprung from Washington Elementary School in New Ulm, Minnesota for calmly and effectively handling this bizarre variation of freeze tag! As soon as he was contacted by parents who witnessed about two dozen fifth graders playing rape tag, he immediately

  • Notified teachers and recess supervisors
  • Had teachers talk to the fifth grade students
  • Sent a letter home to parents

Proactive, appropriate and professional leadership by Mr. Sprung. The kids were not simply punished mindlessly.

Wait til your father gets home

Despite his protests, a Willow Creek Middle School Student was outed to his parents by the school as part of a "bullying prevention effort." So the Alpine School District figures that violating student's right to privacy is a necessary part of prevention. Thankfully the boy's parents have been supportive of their son, but what if this weren't the case? Consider this blog as an official outing (without permission of course) of the school district decision makers as DUMB and DANGEROUS.

Fewer boots on the ground

UGG (literally)! Pottsdown Middle School Principal Gail Cooper recently notified parents that "open top boots" are officially banned in the classroom. Apparently, these middle schoolers are smuggling contraband in their booties...not weapons, not drugs, not pornography...but those darn cell phones! The school already has a mandatory dress code that includes such fine detail as the requirement to wear matching color shoe laces. We understand the need to limit cell phone use to prevent disruption of the classroom environment, but if the problem is pervasive, limiting student expression is unlikely to solve the problem. As technology shrinks the size of communication devices, we have to wonder how far dress codes can go to keep up. We are also concerned about international relations with our Aussie allies. Ugg.

School plumbing inspection gone wild

Volunteer middle school principal Patrick Lott (Bernardsville Middle School) is in the slammer facing charges that he videotaped 22 boys (9 of whom were under the age of 16) as they showered at Immaculata High School. This "plumbing inspection" occurred over a three year period, starting in 2008. Perhaps Patrick is just a plumber wanna-be or is understandably obsessed with faucets, shower heads, and floor drains. We recommend that Mr. Lott seek career counseling or professional help from PA (Plumbers Anonymous).

Going Post-IT

Eighth-grade Middle School student Samantha Bremmer believes in positive messaging. In response to what she saw as mean-spirited bullying, she spent her holiday break composing 820 positive messages to be posted on classmates lockers. Mill Creek Middle School teacher Val Berryman said its nice to see student's encouraging each other. We love random acts of kindness and caring. Way to go Samantha...please consider teaching as a career! Our profession needs people with their hearts and minds in the right place.
