High Heel sneakers and an alligator school bag

The US Supreme Court has ruled on school dress and grooming, essentially finding that the school may impose limits, if dress "disrupts the orderly operation of the school." Seventeen-year old high school junior Asante Coleman is openly gay and simply dressed in 6 inch heels, cargo pants, shirt and scarf. The school is claiming that the heels posed a "safety risk" and suspended Asante when he refused to peel them off. Look...if the kid wants to wear high heels, so what...but the fashionista's say:  definitely give him a talk about them cargo pants, please!

Fewer boots on the ground

UGG (literally)! Pottsdown Middle School Principal Gail Cooper recently notified parents that "open top boots" are officially banned in the classroom. Apparently, these middle schoolers are smuggling contraband in their booties...not weapons, not drugs, not pornography...but those darn cell phones! The school already has a mandatory dress code that includes such fine detail as the requirement to wear matching color shoe laces. We understand the need to limit cell phone use to prevent disruption of the classroom environment, but if the problem is pervasive, limiting student expression is unlikely to solve the problem. As technology shrinks the size of communication devices, we have to wonder how far dress codes can go to keep up. We are also concerned about international relations with our Aussie allies. Ugg.

Dress for success

Eighteen year-old aspiring dancer and model Sydney Spies had her yearbook photo yanked by Durango High School. It apparently did not meet community or professional standards. Ms. Spies acknowledged that some people might think it was too sexy, but she sees this as freedom of expression and we must agree. We have to wonder if the cheerleaders at Durango High are sporting jump suits, or if the wrestlers have thrown away the standard singlets as too revealing. Any ideas as to how the swim team photo may turn out? Finally, watch for this photo on Joan River's "Bitch stole my look!"

PANIC! No Dreadlocks At The Disco!

A student is being banned from escorting his date to Homecoming because he has... wait for it... DREADLOCKS!

The school has no written policy that says students can't have dreadlocks, however the superintendent claims that it has been an unwritten rule.

Schools forced to ban Silly Bandz

Story: Silly Bandz Bracelet Craze: School Ban Over Distraction

Guns, knives, drugs, alcohol, tobacco and Silly Bandz. You can now add colored rubber bands to the list of banned items on school property. We're not sure yet how students are going to make it through the day without these "silly" items, but I think it's safe to assume that test scores are going to sky rocket with them being banned.

School bans 'boobies' breast cancer bracelets

Story: School bans controversial breast cancer bracelets

The principal feels that the students are too young to support a cause, so they are not allowed to raise awareness for breast cancer while in the school hallways. It's amazing how just about everything can be deemed a "distraction to the learning process."

Lady Gay Gay Shirt Gets Teen Sent Home

A Tennessee student was sent home for wearing a t-shirt (above) that reads "I Love Lady Gay Gay". The school has said the shirt would cause a "disruption" to the educational process. When I was a high schooler I was suspended because my underground newspaper caused a disturbance. I never liked this rule, and felt it left way to much power in the hands of the administration. Information can be a major disruption -- for example, what about a class discussion about how neo-con groups fabricated reports that led to the escalation of the cold war in the early 80's-- that might disrupt some peoples realities. Education SHOULD be disruptive -- we should be disrupting kids worldviews on a DAILY BASIS and causing fundamental changes in the way they view the world. If your students are still holding on to some Iron age belief system that says "being gay is wrong", you shouldn't need to protect students from the truth that we are all people and should be treated equally with respect and dignity.

School Bans SF Giants and 49ers clothes

Story: North Bay School Bans Popular Team Apparel

While the rest of the country is under the naive assumption that SF stands for San Francisco, in Bay Area schools, it means "scrap free." By banning the apparel, it will not only help curb the gang problem, but it will finally help put an end to teens wearing jerseys to school. We are currently researching if Richmond, VA is experiencing similar problems with students wearing colors from the Double-A affiliate, the Flying Squirrels.

Student sent home from school for wearing Colts jersey

Story: Colts Jersey Causes Clash at La. School

A Louisiana high school lifted its dress code policy and allowed students to wear black and gold to celebrate the Saints going to the Super Bowl. One Indianapolis native decided to wear his Colts jersey instead. Since students don't have rights inside of public schools, he was immediately told that he was disobeying the principal. Who would have thought that the Super Bowl would have such an impact on the education process?

Students In Trouble Over '9/11' Sweatshirts

Story: Sweatshirt Sparks School Controversy

The War on Terror has now seeped into teenager dress code pranks. No word yet on how many troops Obama plans to deploy to the hallways of American high schools.

Student suspended for wearing Santa Claus suit to suburban Philadelphia high school

Story: Student suspended for wearing Santa Claus suit to suburban Philadelphia high school

The student was handing out candy canes and the principal was handing out suspensions. The principal allegedly also threw a fit when he found out that Tiny Tim was going to have Christmas this year.

Long hair gets Mesquite prekindergartner in trouble

Story: Long hair gets Mesquite prekindergartner in trouble

Once again, the length of a childs hair becomes the center of our education woes. If only every student would come to school with a neatly-trimmed haircut, we would be able to start focusing on the other problems our schools face. Afterall, it's a well supported fact that NO ONE with long hair has ever been successful.

1,500 students disciplined for not wearing uniforms

Story: 1,500 students disciplined for not wearing uniforms

Pop Quiz: Which causes more of a disruption to the learning process? Students not strictly following a dress code, or the entire student body organizing protests against a dress code they feel is absurd? Even many of the parents are opposed to the uniforms. Some argue that it's hard to afford BOTH school clothes and regular clothes. We'll see how long these students can keep this up!

Skinny pants banned from schools in Texas

Story: Odds of wearing skinny pants in Mesquite ISD: slim to none

While baggy pants are a problem in some parts of the country, skinny pants are causing principals' heads to roll in others. I'm thinking that these pants are so tight, and so hard to put on, that maybe students are arriving tardy everyday because it takes them longer to get ready in the morning. Oh, and they look ridiculous...especially on teenage boys.

166 middle-schoolers suspended for dress code violations

Story: 166 middle-schoolers suspended for dress code violations

Everyone knows that one of biggest problems facing our education system has been shirts not being tucked in. When the day comes that all of our students look neat and proper, teachers will again be able to concentrate during instructional time.

Fla. school district restricts athletes' clothing

Story: Fla. school district restricts athletes' clothing

In Florida, it regularly reaches 100 degrees outside. That is hot. As a tradition, the athletes don't practice wearing extra layers. In fact, it's common to see the girls running in sports bras and the boys with their shirts off. As awesome of a sight that might be for classmates and pedophiles alike, a couple parents recently complained so of course a stricter dress code is now being enforced. I anticipate these same parents will be the first ones pointing fingers at the school when a student dies of heat exhaustion.

Patriotic photo refused in yearbook

Story: Patriotic photo refused

When he graduates, the young man will be entering the Army and fighting a war against Iraq. He is currently fighting a battle against his school for the right to wear his uniform for his senior picture in the yearbook. The principal says- No way. For the record, his school practices the Pledge of Allegiance and will also be closed this Veteran's Day. Go figure.

Elementary School Bans Halloween Costumes

Story: Elementary School Bans Halloween Costumes

It's no longer called "Halloween." Now it's "Fall Festival." The principal banned masks and costumes because it makes it difficult to identify people. THAT'S THE POINT OF A COSTUME! The principal is also researching other ways to ensure her students don't have fun...ever.

Uniform violation costs cross country team title

Story: Uniform violation costs Bulls title

Everybody who plays sports in Baltimore should know that Rule 9, Section 6, Article 1b of the National Federation of High Schools rule book states: "Items displaying seams stitched on the outside of the garment in a visible contrasting color to the undergarment will be illegal beginning with the 2009-10 school year." Possibly next to steroids, I can't think of a worse mistake a high school athlete can make.

School prints sex chat phone number on shirts

Story: Adult chat line accidentally printed on school shirts

According to the article, the PTA spent over 500 hours putting together a jog-a-thon event. All participants received a shirt with some words, images, and a 1-800-EAT-DUST number on it. During the 500 hours of exhausting labor, nobody had the time to actually dial the phone number to realize they were adverting a she-male porn line. Well, hopefully the PTA can develop a plan to help explain to all the six and seven year olds at this school what phone sex means.
