Minnesota's largest school district has developed a model to address harassment and bullying of GLBT students that may serve as a national template.  How this girls T-shirt disrupts the orderly operation of the school is beyond our comprehension. Supreme Court rulings put the burden of proof on the school district...not left to the whim of some misguided school administrator. Lynn High School VICE Principal (vice...that explains it!) Joe O'Hagan told the girl that the shirt was political and offended some people. WE find Gingrich for President buttons highly offensive and obviously political, but support the right to wear them. Looks like the old bait and switch to us! Minnesota-based Junkyard Prophet, a Christian youth ministry promised an anti-bullying and anti-drug message at the assembly in Dunkerton, Iowa. Instead, the kids got lectured on the evils of homosexuality and pre-marital sex. The group told the high school students that "anyone who is gay will die before they reach age 42." The students are pissed and the superintendent promised that this will never happen again. We hope these Christian prophets did not get paid for the shameless performance and that they will actually deliver on what a youth ministry should promise...lots of religious bullshit! Oh wait, they did deliver!

The US Supreme Court has ruled on school dress and grooming, essentially finding that the school may impose limits, if dress "disrupts the orderly operation of the school." Seventeen-year old high school junior Asante Coleman is openly gay and simply dressed in 6 inch heels, cargo pants, shirt and scarf. The school is claiming that the heels posed a "safety risk" and suspended Asante when he refused to peel them off. Look...if the kid wants to wear high heels, so what...but the fashionista's say:  definitely give him a talk about them cargo pants, please!

She recently testified as the sole voice of opposition to a state bill that "would ban discrimination against LGBT state employees -- like public school teachers." Her comparison of homosexuality to necrophilia, voyeurism and pedophilia may be based on personal experience! Or perhaps her husband has likened their sex life as corpse-like in nature. With friends like these...

There seems to be a shortage of intelligence at Albert Einstein High School in Montgomery County, Maryland. An anti-GLBT group, Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX) was permitted to send home literature with students conveying that there was something wrong with you if you are not heterosexual...that you shouldn't be convinced you are gay if "only one part of you tells you so." PFOX didn't explicitly identify which part that might be...leaving open one's imagination. What we can't imagine is a school sending this crap home with students.

Despite his protests, a Willow Creek Middle School Student was outed to his parents by the school as part of a "bullying prevention effort." So the Alpine School District figures that violating student's right to privacy is a necessary part of prevention. Thankfully the boy's parents have been supportive of their son, but what if this weren't the case? Consider this blog as an official outing (without permission of course) of the school district decision makers as DUMB and DANGEROUS.

Once again into the abyss of the far right.. Tennessee GOP State Senator Stacey Campfield has sponsored the Don't Say Gay Bill for consideration. Here are just a few of his intellectual arguments for such legislation:

• "Bullying is the biggest lark out there."
• "50% of theaters are based on something about homosexuality."
• "AIDS- started with one guy screwing a monkey...it was an airline pilot if I recall."

A group of parents asked that the Anoka-Hennepin School District School Board to include information about "ex-gay therapy" and "Gay related immune deficiency (GRID)" in its curriculum policy revisions. The Parent Action League (PAL) apparently subscribes to the notion that shaking the rooster claw over GLBT children will cure them and wants to use language (GRID) that hasn't been used in the medical community for over 25 years! We are waiting for them to advocate blood-letting and routine exorcisms as well. Thankfully, the board has resisted pressure from the community neanderthals. This is a district that has experienced six suicides in less than 24 months, some of which were gay students. We join Tammy Aaberg, mother of one of the suicide victims, in support of the board for resisting pressure from PAL.

Lady Gay Gay Shirt Gets Teen Sent Home

A Tennessee student was sent home for wearing a t-shirt (above) that reads "I Love Lady Gay Gay". The school has said the shirt would cause a "disruption" to the educational process. When I was a high schooler I was suspended because my underground newspaper caused a disturbance. I never liked this rule, and felt it left way to much power in the hands of the administration. Information can be a major disruption -- for example, what about a class discussion about how neo-con groups fabricated reports that led to the escalation of the cold war in the early 80's-- that might disrupt some peoples realities. Education SHOULD be disruptive -- we should be disrupting kids worldviews on a DAILY BASIS and causing fundamental changes in the way they view the world. If your students are still holding on to some Iron age belief system that says "being gay is wrong", you shouldn't need to protect students from the truth that we are all people and should be treated equally with respect and dignity.

Dennis Rodman was one of the most prolific rebounders in NBA history who has been a key member of many championship teams. RuPaul can be seen as a torchbearer in the gay community for not only becoming a well-recognized cross-dresser, but served in lead positions in a number of major network tv shows. These individuals are among a long list of African-Americans who were celebrated in an LA school recently. They also happen to be the reason three teachers are suspended right now. The superintendent fails to recognize their great accomplishments, and believes these teachers need punished for highlighting their success.

Story: Illinois Teacher Suspended After Assignment Involving Homosexuality

If the teacher was forcing kids to be gay and read graphic stories about homosexual encounters, I could see why some parents might protest. The fact is, it was an OPTIONAL reading assignment from a science magazine about homosexuality in the animal kingdom. Homophobic parents threw their arms up trying to get this guy out of the classroom. It always nice to know some moms and dads want to make sure their kids grow up being close-minded.

They don't call it the 'Bible Belt' for nothing. It's no surprise that this Mississippi school doesn't recognize gay rights, and therefore wants nothing to do with a girl wearing a tux for her yearbook pic. When the administration finally grows up and enters the 21st century, they will soon realize not only does nobody else have a problem with this, but they've made themselves look like fools in the process.
