Know it all

Debbie wants to pull up the drawbridge to school buildings and leave parents outside the education moat. She spoke at a hearing on school choice in Michigan and essentially told officials that parents do not know what is best for their kids. We hope that she doesn't represent the majority view of the Michigan  Elementary & Middle School Principals Association. On the other hand, this pretty much cancels the need for those darn parent-teacher conferences and silly initiatives to form a meaningful partnership between parents and teachers...wonder what the PTA will do...bake sale anyone?

Going Post-IT

Eighth-grade Middle School student Samantha Bremmer believes in positive messaging. In response to what she saw as mean-spirited bullying, she spent her holiday break composing 820 positive messages to be posted on classmates lockers. Mill Creek Middle School teacher Val Berryman said its nice to see student's encouraging each other. We love random acts of kindness and caring. Way to go Samantha...please consider teaching as a career! Our profession needs people with their hearts and minds in the right place.

Tea Party gains momentum in Michigan

Politics schmolitics…the Tea Party rules at Hastings High near Grand Rapids. A teacher reportedly poured hot tea on two boys to break up a fight. Tea for two as they say. The boys received minor burns from the Spanish teacher’s actions…mucho gusto!  Tea Party supporters are touting this teacher for a congressional run in order to lure more latino voter support. In the meantime, the school may be looking into some behavior management models that do not require deadly force!!

Obama Induced Sleep

Despite President Obama's high status and inspirational words, he still managed to put one graduate asleep during his commencement speech at Kalamazoo High School.

Michigan 6-Year-Old Suspended From School for Making Gun With Hand

Story: Michigan 6-Year-Old Suspended From School for Making Gun With Hand

After pretending to shoot his classmates with his fingers, the 6-year old was sent home for the rest of the week. Hopefully during his suspension, his mom allows him to use his pretend pencil and pretend books to keep learning.

Students In Trouble Over '9/11' Sweatshirts

Story: Sweatshirt Sparks School Controversy

The War on Terror has now seeped into teenager dress code pranks. No word yet on how many troops Obama plans to deploy to the hallways of American high schools.

Kalamazoo Catholic schoolchildren write letters to Baby Jesus instead of Santa

Story: Kalamazoo Catholic schoolchildren write letters to Baby Jesus instead of Santa

This year for Christmas, the child of Christ will be receiving notes from children instead of Santa Claus. These kids are going to be in for a heartbreaker when they realize that neither Santa or baby Jesus exist! Furthermore, even if baby Jesus received letters from a classroom of children...infants can't read! No wonder our kids aren't doing well in school.

Detroit parents want teachers jailed over low test scores

Story: Detroit parents want DPS teachers, officials jailed over low test scores

After learning that some local schools ranked the worst in the nation in math scores, parents responded by demanding the teachers go to jail for their lack of successful results. More sound suggestions might include providing additional training or hiring better qualified teachers, but it's obvious this town wants their teachers burned at the stake. You gotta wonder if they are just taking their frustrations out because the Lions have had so many consecutive losing seasons.

School bans 'grinding;' some Mt. Pleasant students protest

Story: School bans 'grinding;' some Mt. Pleasant students protest

If you haven't seen teens dancing over the last ten years, basically 'grinding' looks very similar to having sex, but with clothes on and standing up (or bending over at times). Some adults (probably the same ones who disobeyed their parents when they started dancing to Elvis and Chubby Checker decades ago) cannot come to terms with this new style. So as you can guess, the students decided to boycott the school homecoming, and develop their own dance, but allow the element of 'fun.' We plan on sending the principal a copy of Footloose.

Show up to school, win a plasma TV

Story: Show up to school, win a plasma TV

Students who attend school in Detroit will be entered into a raffle to win a big screen tv, a laptop, an iPod Nano, and an American Express gift card. Hopefully the children who do not receive prizes will still be the winners of a decent education.

5 teens attack, injure Muslim girl on school bus in Ann Arbor

Story: 5 teens attack, injure Muslim girl on school bus in Ann Arbor

I am assuming the 16-year old girl was posing some sort of a threat to the five students who beat her, dragged her, and ripped off her scarf. Why else would they feel compelled to act like this? I guess high school students don't have a clear understanding about what it means to be convicted of a hate crime. That's probably because it's not on the standardized tests.

Wyandotte schools probes teachers' year-end party

Story: Wyandotte schools probes teachers' year-end party

While most teachers spend the day after the last day of school turning in grades and cleaning their classrooms, this wild bunch decided to rent out a clubhouse at a golf course and throw a huge drinking bash. Local golfers were less than amused to be witnesses of public intoxication, public nudity, and public urination. I agree that teachers deserve a day to unwind and celebrate, so here are some tips for next year: Be a little discreet about the fact you are teachers, find a little more private of a location, and don't buy the booze with district funds!

Michigan senior aces ACT, SAT and PSAT

Though it hasn't been confirmed, we heard she did it with one arm tied behind her back.

Teen charged in beating of school bus driver

This boy has a history of attacking school employees, but for some reason we keep giving him chances to put adults in the hospital. It's a shame that a bus ride to school has to become a police scene. If only we hired cage fighters to drive buses, these problems could be avoided.

Frozen body found at elementary school

Story: Frozen body found at Saginaw elementary school

This time, it wasn't a suspended student. You can imagine the frustration a child faces when they've been waiting patiently for the 46-year old woman to go down the slide, only to learn that she is frozen there. Too bad this "jungle" gym had "arctic" conditions.

Teen student left in the cold after being suspended

Story: LINCOLN PARK: Teen student left in the cold after being suspended

Basically, the school was tired with dealing with his antics while inside, so putting him in 15 degrees below might teach him a lesson about respect. Based on his track record, it seems this school might not be the perfect fit for him, but without a sub-zero winter jacket and a caring mother, what are his other options?

Dog attacks students on school bus

Story: Dog attacks students on school bus in Ottawa Co.

I guess it's easy to see how a responsible driver could mistake a child for a dog as everyone is boarding the bus. The only physical differences are that dogs are about 3 feet shorter, they walk on four legs, their skin is covered in fur, and they bark instead of talk. Simple mistake.

5th grader kicked out of school for pink hair

Story: Sawyer student can't go to school because of hair

This is why Jem had to drop out of school to become a rock star. Note to administrators: The actual disruption a hair cut causes lasts only a couple of hours on the first day. When you create media stirs and kick kids out of schools because they dyed their hair, wouldn't you agree this causes much more of a distraction for the whole school? Oh well, one day we'll get it right.

Mt. Pleasant school to offer buyouts to senior faculty, staff

Story: Mt. Pleasant school to offer buyouts to senior faculty, staff

In other words, the schools wants to get rid of all the experienced teachers because they get paid too much, and replace them with fresh college grads who can start at the minimum salary. What a way to show your appreciation to the faculty that have invested years and years into these children. If this logic works, NY Yankees owner George Steinbrenner plans to let go of all his overpaid all-stars, and fill his line-up with rookies.
