Immigrants need not apply...to college

Georgia lawmakers are tough on undocumented immigrants. They want all members of the University System of Georgia to ferret out these students from the total enrollment of 318,000 to make room for "real Americans." A recent audit reveals that there are about 300 undocumented students enrolled (about .09%). We are guessing that Georgia will have to search far and wide to fill those 300 seats with "real Americans" (whatever that means). Ludicrous way to spend legislative effort but Georgia wants to follow Arizona in getting tough on these folks. Red meat for the red states.

Tough times

This is truly a sweet deal for execs who run for-profit colleges and universities. Given the high pressure of new federal regulations that have cut into the profit margin, about 60 exec needed a break in Tahoe, hitting the spas and cocktail lounges for some serious networking and R & R. They are understandably stressed over new fed regulations that have resulted in closer scrutiny regarding student debt and no job prospects as they graduate. The for-profits garner over $30 billion/year in the form of student loans and grants from the fed. The payback?
Disproportionate loan defaults and low job placements. Solution... bottoms up and hit the hot tubs heavy in Tahoe.

Big Bloomberg is watching

NYPD conducts routine surveillance on Muslim college students, including daily reviews of student websites, blogs, and most recently undercover presence at a rafting trip near Buffalo attended by Muslim undergrads from the City College of New York. Although Mayor Bloomberg defends such invasion of privacy, we must agree with Yale President Richard Levin who stated

"I am writing to state, in the strongest possible terms, that police surveillance based on religion, nationality, or peacefully expressed political opinions is antithetical to the values of Yale, the academic community, and the United States."

Tiny Bubbles

Its the economy of higher education stupid! Student debt "now outpaces credit-card debt", approaching a trillion George Washingtons. The employment rate for young adults is at a 60 year low with public university students saddled with an average of $20K in debt and private university students carrying a whopping average of about $30K. These are averages for the statistically unenlightened. Imagine students at the upper reaches of the debt normal curve...maybe in excess of $100,000? What can we expect when this bubble bursts? Chain these students to low paying jobs where they are undervalued! Just like now.

Are the Liberal Arts Dead?

With the economic shitshow most folks are experiencing, some colleges are slashing liberal arts majors in attempt to focus on majors students "can actually sell". As the job market gets increasingly more competitive, college students are finding out they can't just hit keggers for 5 years and then expect to get a job. Unfortunately, the focus is still on "what can I sell" - in this case, time / skill in exchange for a paycheck vs. what value can I create?

The problem is, you can't always predict what will be the hot field when you graduate in 5 years or in 10 years or 30 years. Experts aren't even sure. What is the safe bet and advice for students then? I'd be looking to ways to get experience in a variety of emerging fields, building my problem solving skills, creativity, and team building. Being able to bring together people, ideas, and technologies will always be a high value activity. Entrepreneurship should also be a big part of the conversation with todays high school kids. I speak around the country about entrepreneurship and education and it is severely lacking in the curriculum.

What are your thoughts of how to help students decide what areas to pursue?

Texas Tech Students Rented School Buses To Party

Story: Texas Tech Students Used School Buses To Party

It sure was nice of the Plainview school district to rent out their school buses for frat boys to party in. It's good to know they now have a safe place to get liquored up on the weekends. I wonder how many elementary school kids learned what Jello shots smell like on their way to school Monday morning.

MIT Students Explain How to Photograph Space for $150

Actual photo taken by students for less than $150!

STORY: MIT Students Explain How to Photograph Space for $150

Some MIT students rigged up a used digital camera, weather balloon, cell phone and Styrofoam beer cooler to take photos of outer space. Amazing. The total cost was $148 and didn't require any special hacking of the components -- this would be an amazing science class or art / photography project for a class or independent student. Of course, if the gov keeps cutting NASA spending, this might be the only way the current generation sees outer space. Next up, turn some toilet paper rolls, a pack of jumbo sparklers and a gold fish bowl into a space ship.

Free prize from DETENTIONSLIP to any teacher / parent who does this with their student. Write DETENTIONSLIP.ORG in big letters on the balloon, and send photos to TIPS@detentionslip.org -- we will feature it on the site.

College Grad Can't Find Job, Wants $$$ Back

She graduated in April, hasn't found a decent job yet, so is now suing her school because of it. Maybe she hasn't read a newspaper recently to know that we are currently facing one of the largest unemployment rates in decades. This is a picture perfect example of what is wrong with a lot of youth today. They expect everything to be handed to them, and panic when it doesn't go their way. Something tells me her rigid work ethics aren't exactly going to be catching the eyes of an employer anytime soon.

Congrats to DetentionSlip Dad Dr. Kenneth Adams!

DetentionSlip.org would like to congratulate Dr. Kenneth Adams of Edinboro University on 35 years in Public Education. Dr. Adams has been a high school biology teacher, university proffessor, and most recently, Dean of the School of Education at Edinboro University of PA. This past Sunday was his last commencement before his July retirement, where he was leid about 200 times by the graduates of the school of education.

He is also the father of DetentionSlip.org co-founder Anthony David Adams.

"My father has been the single greatest influence on my ideas about social justice, public education and activism. He has always been a voice for change throughout his career, and has made a life long commitment to making the world a better place through education. Congrats Dad!"

UC San Diego Sends Acceptance E-mail to Wrong List

Congratulations! Years of hard work and effort have paid off and you've been accepted into our university. April Fools! The school emailed about 29,000 rejected applicants with news of acceptance, only to quickly crush their dreams because Peggy from the Dean's office hasn't quite mastered how to use email yet. Ahh, technology. It's a good thing this school isn't in charge of relaying medical test results.

Job Forecast for College Grads: Grimmer Than Ever

From the article:

"serving lattes for minimum wage plus tips is a painful prospect to the average college student, who graduates with $21,000 in the red."
We just reported about the 700 people applying for an Ohio school janitor position. And now Time Magazine is reporting even with a college education the job prospects are slim. How are teachers handling keeping moral up in the classroom, and more importantly, how are they equipping students to succeed despite the highest unemployment rate in decades?

Iowa college apologizes for offensive typo

Story: Iowa college apologizes for offensive typo

Briefly: A calendar was handed out to 10,000 students and in one February entry, instead of reading "Black History Lunch," it read "Black History Linch." Kind of a big over-sight don't you think? To make up for the mistake they gave everyone a sticker to put over it. Unfortunately you can't really put a sticker over 150 years of racism and unequal rights. Maybe next time they can have some non-white students proofread their publications.

Study Finds Little Benefit in New SAT

Story: Study Finds Little Benefit in New SAT

"
The 3-hour, 45-minutes test is almost as good a predictor as four years of high school grades..." says Laurence Bunin, senior vice president of operations at the board, and general manager of the SAT program.
Laurence, quick question buddy. Why not just use the four years of high school grades? I guess you couldn't charge students $45 each -- and the students would save almost 4 hours of their time, not to mention the books, hours and hours of prep, and stress.

Let's just do away with these useless tests. Why do we need to predict how well kids will do anyway? If they want to go, let them experience it.

BREAKING: UW-Madison Students Protest Winter

DetentionSlip.org Exclusive

Madison, WI. University of Wisconsin - Madison students Maggie Koopman and Ben Grady are leading a student movement at UW-Madison to end Winter. Complete with signs, cheers, and a clipboard full of names, Grady was certain they would gather enough signatures to effectively lobby the state legislature to end Winter. However, he wasn't exactly sure how many signatures that required. Not all the Badgers are looking forward to Spring season though. Some students, apparently embittered by the constant stream of political protests at Madison, mumbled, "So you hate Christmas?" This is seen as just the first step in building solidarity within the movement to eventually eliminate Fall and Spring as well.
