All you need's a little heart

Candy out and origami in on Valentine's Day this year. This novel expression of love has been suggested by the school principal in a love letter sent home to parents. Apparently an excessive romantic chocolate fest caused chaos last year at the otherwise serene elementary school. Valentine's Day candy also violates the schools food sharing policy. Our solution...have the children construct the recommended origami from uneaten cafeteria food. Should be enough love for the whole town.

Condoms Won't be Given to Elementary School Children

A Cape Cod school issued a vague but controversial statement proclaiming it's safe sex stance, allowing school children in Cape Cod to obtain condoms if needed. After much controversy, the school corrected their misunderstood statement, clarifying the age they meant, not allowing condoms to be given to elementary aged children.

SHOCK: 6 yr old accused of sexually abusing students

Allegations that a 6 yr old student at Middleton’s Fuller Meadow Elementary School has been sexually abusing other students hit the radar this week. Reports that 10 other students have been victims of the abuse. The student has been removed from the school.. however, the bigger issue here seems to be -- what is going on with this kid at home? I'd bet my lunch money this little guy has been the victim of some sort of sexual abuse himself.

Mass. School Bus Driver Charged With Raping 8th Grader

Story: Mass. School Bus Driver Charged With Raping 8th Grader

There may have been a language barrier, but it clearly needed to be defined what the difference is between giving students a ride vs. giving students a ride. It probably got a little suspicious when the girl NEVER got off at her stop, and was always the last one on the bus. Hopefully there is a prison near his route, because he may as well call that his last stop.

Top 5 Reasons Schools are Closing This Week

As a kid, you always hoped that some unforeseen circumstance causes your school to close so you don't have to go to class. Below you'll see which students got their wish this week.

We can only hope that whatever they did on their day off, that the school wasn't spying on them via laptop webcams!

School Shut Down By Rats -- Again

Story: School Shut Down By Rats -- Again

Of all the reasons to cancel class, this school has closed twice now in two weeks because they can't seem to sort out their rat problem. While some schools have started to resemble prisons, this one is taking a different route...making their classrooms seem like sewers. All for the children!

School staff get insulin instead of swine flu shot

Story: School staff get insulin instead of swine flu shot

There is nothing better for your immune system than getting a healthy dose of insulin. Maybe the nurse figured the teachers were at greater risk for diabetes than swine flu? Hopefully next time she goes digging in the medicine cabinet she can see if her nursing credentials are in there somewhere.

Teacher fired for not being fluent English

It must be hard to teach the English languange when you don't fully grasp it yourself. But at some point this school decided to hire this teacher whose proficiency has been described as "utterly incomprehensible." Now tempers are flaring on both sides of the debate because she was fired and plans to sue the school for over $1 million. That will buy a lot of English speaking courses.

Story: N.H. teacher accused of robbing two Mass. banks

I always thought that teachers get paid during their breaks. Evidently it wasn't enough for this guy to buy all his Christmas presents this year. I just hope he doesn't ask his students what they did over the holidays.

Taunton second-grader suspended over drawing of Jesus

Story: Taunton second-grader suspended over drawing of Jesus

Whether or not you believe in the story of Jesus, it is widely accepted that he died while crucified on a cross. The image isn't a warped interpretation of death from a violent 8-year old. The school administration disagrees. After seeing the above drawing, the boy was sent home and recommended for a psychological evaluation. I don't even think Jesus himself was so quick to call someone a 'sinner!'

Chelmsford school bans holiday items at gift shop

Story: Chelmsford school bans holiday items at gift shop

Anything that has any resemblance to either Christmas or religion was scratched off the inventory list at this elementary school. This includes Santa, candy canes, stockings, basically anything green or red. We've already accepted that we can't call it "Christmas" in schools anymore, but now we're stripping away all holiday spirit? At this pace, I give it about ten years until children don't even get this day off from school.

High school bans 'Meep' from student vocabulary

Story: What's wrong with 'meep'? It's all in how you say it

According to Merriam-Webster, the word 'meep' has absolutely no meaning. According to the principal at Danvers High, it stands for complete disrespect and disruption of the education process. Leave it to high school kids to find a creative way to have innocent fun around the hallways (and then get in trouble for it). Don't worry though, the English language is full of millions of non-words that will soon replace 'meep." Keep us updated Danvers!

Students to get breathalyzers in school

Story: Students to get breathalyzers in school

Students getting drunk during the school day must be a huge problem in Foxborough. This story really makes it clear that our white schools are facing their own challenging obstacles in education. But I wonder if the teachers will be subject to these tests as well?

Somerville kindergartener walks out of school unnoticed

Story: Somerville kindergartener walks out of school unnoticed

A little young to be cutting class don't you think? Apparently there is no one around to raise a red flag when they see a 5-year old walking in the opposite direction of the school. Just wait til he gets his drivers license!

MIT Students Explain How to Photograph Space for $150

Actual photo taken by students for less than $150!

STORY: MIT Students Explain How to Photograph Space for $150

Some MIT students rigged up a used digital camera, weather balloon, cell phone and Styrofoam beer cooler to take photos of outer space. Amazing. The total cost was $148 and didn't require any special hacking of the components -- this would be an amazing science class or art / photography project for a class or independent student. Of course, if the gov keeps cutting NASA spending, this might be the only way the current generation sees outer space. Next up, turn some toilet paper rolls, a pack of jumbo sparklers and a gold fish bowl into a space ship.

Free prize from DETENTIONSLIP to any teacher / parent who does this with their student. Write DETENTIONSLIP.ORG in big letters on the balloon, and send photos to TIPS@detentionslip.org -- we will feature it on the site.

School gets rid of ALL books in library

Story: Welcome to the library. Say goodbye to the books.

In an effort to prepare for the digital age, the school is clearing out the entire library to create a technology center. Some say it will be easier for the students to adapt to and learn in this environment, while critics argue that the value of books cannot be replaced by computers. Well, after reading the article, I am sure there is one thing that everyone can agree on- the $50,000 coffee shop is the best practical use of their budget.

Chicopee students free speech violated?

Story: Chicopee students free speech violated?

A popular teacher is being fired and the students have been rallying in protest. A bunch of kids have already been suspended, so the ACLU is looking to have their backs. At DetentionSlip, we love when students voice their opinions. To our knowledge, this teacher is inspiring and not in the middle of any sex scandals (which so commonly plague our schools). Find out what it's all about at Save Mr. Morales!

Aspiring teachers fall short on math

Story: Aspiring teachers fall short on math

They've recently added a math section to the state's licensing exam. 75% of the future teachers failed it. To put that into more simple terms- 3 out of every 4 test-takers don't know how to teach math to elementary and middle school students. This means there is a high probability that schools won't be looking to employ them. You can use mental math on that one.

Drunken driving arrest for Mass. high school prom limo driver

Story: Drunken driving arrest for Mass. high school prom limo driver

A school in Rhode Island had to ban limos to prevent drunk driving on prom night. I guess we now have to factor in the limo driver getting boozed as well. Students became suspicious when the he kept trying to talk them in to swinging by the Taco Bell drive-thru on the way home. Maybe next year we'll just let mom and dad drive.

Brockton teen shows up at school with mask for swine flu prank

Story: Brockton teen shows up at school with mask for swine flu prank

With panic of the Swine flu causing hysteria around the country and closing many major school functions already, one boy decided to tap into that fear with a little goof of his own. According to the principal, "He’s a good kid, but he was just being stupid." That's no way to talk to a kid is it? In the event the flu does reach this school district, who will be laughing when his mask ironically protected him against the virus?
