Not so private parts
Smells Like: elementary school , New York , sexTalk about hands-on learning! This version of the old "show and tell" took a new twist at PS189 in New York as parents reported kindergarteners were exposing themselves, showing body parts, and simulating oral sex in the classroom while the teacher was present. One educator lamented that "teachers can't always see everything going on." Really? Shouldn't this one be on the priority radar screen? Maybe this was an OBGYN career day for the little tots.

In way over her head
Smells Like: elementary school , idiocy , New York , teacher terminationRubino successfully won back her teaching position after being terminated for posting the following on Facebook after a Harlem student drowned on a trip to Long Island:
"After today, I am thinking the beach sounds like a wonderful idea for my 5th graders! I HATE THEIR GUTS!" and...if a student was drowning, "Yes, I would [sic] not throw a life jacket in for a million!!"
The City will fight her court ordered reinstatement and we are fully behind their appeal. Rubino says she is sorry and has paid for her mistake. Here is how the Old and New Testaments apply...you suffer the consequences for this egregious conduct (Old Testament God)...you are fired and will never teach again! (New Testament God)...you are forgiven,. These are not mutually exclusive. Fired and forgiven. End of story, not reinstated! If the teacher's union is behind her reinstatement, shame on them. Forgive her but NEVER let her hold a teaching position again.

One tough cookie
Smells Like: high school , New York , racismNew York City high school student Nesshell Rainford provides a powerful essay chronicling her journey through adolescence and her confrontation with racism> with one crowd she was "too white" with another "ghetto" and she experienced these stereotypes both face-to-face in her schools as well as in cyberspace. At one point her mom advised her to "be satisfied with the body God gave you" and she thought "how can I be satisfied when I felt God had made a mistake in my skin color?" Her essay makes us question the culture of schools where this is pervasive...even her African drum instructor told her she had no rythm...she was too white. We sense that this talented young woman will be successful and will speak volumes to folks that need to listen to her message as a human being. Thanks Nesshell.

It takes a village
Smells Like: homeless , New York , scienceWe have been following the remarkable story of Samantha Garvey, Intel Talent Search semi-finalist from New York. Her family was evicted from their home on New Year's day, spent a week in a hotel before moving to a homeless shelter. This gifted young woman's talent and hard work inspired Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to find a three-bedroom, rent subsidized home for Samantha and her family. This is American exceptionalism...recognizing a problem and doing the right thing. Hats off to all who have supported this young woman and her family and the best of luck to her in what we hope will be a wonderful career in the sciences.

Hold your water!
Smells Like: classroom management , elementary education , New York , punishmentConey Island PS 90 has a zero tolerance pee policy to be envied. Of all of the serious problems facing public education, 5th grade teacher Stephanie Warner has crystallized the key issue to student success…self bladder control! If only we could hold off on the impulse to use the bathroom at age 10 we could then be prepared for success in virtually every other endeavor. And what a novel use of token reinforcement…Ms. Warner allows children who can control their bladder needs and don’t use any of their “toilet tickets” the opportunity to trade in these tickets for prizes…like a discount at the local urologist! BF Skinner would be so proud.

Reform School NYC : Art for Education
Smells Like: amazing , art , New York| Installation by DetentionSlip.org founder Anthony David Adams entitled "Leave Them Kids Alone" at Reform School in New York City. Vegan belts provided by Truth Belts out of Canada, laser etching by PRPLMNT out of Brooklyn. |
DetentionSlip founder Anthony David Adams has contributed an installation entitled "Leave Them Kids Alone" -- a collection of 20 belts laser engraved with the names of each state where corporal punishment is still legal, and an accompanying wooden paddle.
According to Adams "The response to the piece has been amazing. I overheard a couple saying they came in from Queens to see the show because someone posted a photo of the work on facebook... and I had to do a double take when I saw Adrian Grenier (Vinny Chase from Entourage) visibly and audibly react in shock when he came to see it Saturday night. I've been around talking with people, and it's really doing it's job to raise awareness and start conversations -- most people are outraged and say that they had no idea this was happening in US Public Schools."

What a cool project to do with your kids. We've seen a similar set up before, but I think this is the first we've seen of an HD camera being sent up.
Again, these types of things can be put together for a few hundred bucks -- what an AMAZING science project for a classroom to do.
Have the kids each sign a small contract saying they will explore the world through science, and send the contract to space! Frame them up and give the kids a great souvenir that will be sure to motivate them to keep science in their future.

NYC Teachers Stashed Stolen Money In School
Smells Like: New York , theft
Officials say that former school business manager Katina Williams wrote more than $30,000 in checks payable to cash for unclear expenses, diverted the school funds into three bank accounts between 2005 and 2007, then apparently cashed them herself. Her frequent use of the checks "suggests a portion" of the money "was stolen." But Williams claims that she was following orders from Principal Shaniquia Dixon, and she called the DOE on Dixon: "It wasn't me; it was for her. All I was doing was following instructions. After I told her I wasn't going to do it anymore, I was ... fired from the school."

NY teen charged in second plot on his old high school
Smells Like: New York , violenceNY teen, Christopher Franko, didn't learn the first time the consequences of plotting an attack against his high school. In addition to the consequences, he was thankfully unsuccessful. The second time he was just as unsuccessful, but drew another plotter, Dana Saltzman, in on the trouble. They planned to shoot the school guards, then as many students as possible, then police, then themselves. They were arrested with no bail and face heavy jail time.

Queens High School Reunion Becomes Deadly
Smells Like: New York , violence
A group of twenty-somethings gathered for a private junior high school reunion party when the invitation went viral, spreading across the internet. The party began to spiral out of control as more and more people showed up--to the point where it became more like a block party than a reunion. It, especially, went downhill when one party crasher picked a fight with an invited member that turned into open fire on the guests. Six people got injured and one died. The man, still not found by the police, had an undisclosed issue with one of the invited guests.
Could the internet as a social agent be the blame for this, or was violence between the two party goers inevitable?

Child Brings Dirty Needles to School
Smells Like: New York
After a child brought used needles to school and pricked three students, the school informed parents. The parents were concerned for their children’s health. The needles were picked up from the ground, which made parents question the protocol of Harlem Hospital. The children were tested for HIV and Hepatitis, both which can be transmitted through needles. However, parents do not seem to be concerned with how their children acted in this situation. Who, if anyone, should be responsible for this misuse of dirty needles?
