Time Capsule Found Inside SF School Wall

A student doing research in the library discovered a time capsule inside the walls of Cleveland Elementary School in San Fransisco, CA. Students got a hands on history lesson as they opened a metal box containing letters, photographs and other items left for them over 100 years ago.

Have you created a time capsule? Why not make one with your class today!

Pay Pal Founder To Give Students $100k to Drop Out

Peter Thiel, PayPal Founder and maverick investor has a new program to move our world forward. He intends to find 20 students under 20 years old, and give them up to $100k to "stop out" of school for 2 years to develop ideas, start companies and change the world.

He cites the increased costs of education, a risk averse culture, and limited exposure to entrepreneurship as main reasons for this program.

He made the announcement at the TechCrunch Distrupt event, see minute 18 of the video.

BIG BROTHER: California students get tracking devices

A California preschool is outfitting students with a jersey that has a tracking device to automatically take attendance and determine if the kids have eaten yet. I'd imagine the local teenage hackers will have fun with this.

They say "Welcome to Hollywood"... but this time, they're saying "Please rescue me from Hollywood!" From Hollywood High School's broken Ferris wheel anyway, where at least 10 passengers sat stranded on the broken ride. Firefighters rescued all the ride goers. using a 100 foot aerial ladder as a crane to lower the riders to the ground. No injuries were reported.

Students and Schools Sue for School Funding

Nine school districts and over 60 children including 16-year-old Maya Robles-Wong as lead plaintiff filed a lawsuit against the California government, regarding its failure to support its public schools. This is because California is far behind other states in funding education, needing to hire another 104,000 staff members to meet the average.

But if the school districts win, Sacramento would have to fund schools based on the law, so that the city and government would have to supply books, physical education, competent teachers, English instruction, science labs, and special education.

California student was injured in High School Shooting

A student was hospitalized after being shot at South Gate High School. The suspect, who was not affiliated with the school, was taken into custody. However, the administrators only briefly locked down the campus. Apparently, one teen getting hurt wasn’t serious enough for a long lockdown.

What should a school do in a situation where shooting is involved?

California teacher accused of allowing sex in class

Story: California teacher accused of allowing sex in class

Occasionally, if there is time left in the day, teachers will allow students to complete their homework. If you are really lucky, your teacher will allow you to engage in oral sex with a classmate.

Teacher suspended over Black History Month photos

Story: 3 LA Teachers Removed Over Choice of Black Heroes

OJ Simpson was a gridiron great who not only set several NFL records, but successfully transitioned into a notable acting career with commercials and movies. Dennis Rodman was one of the most prolific rebounders in NBA history who has been a key member of many championship teams. RuPaul can be seen as a torchbearer in the gay community for not only becoming a well-recognized cross-dresser, but served in lead positions in a number of major network tv shows. These individuals are among a long list of African-Americans who were celebrated in an LA school recently. They also happen to be the reason three teachers are suspended right now. The superintendent fails to recognize their great accomplishments, and believes these teachers need punished for highlighting their success.

5th Graders Share Fruity Pot-Laced Snack at School

Story: 5th Graders Share Fruity Pot-Laced Snack at School

It should come as no surprise that the school is Stoneman Elementary. I get the feeling that all the kids have older siblings that make Fruity Pebble snacks with weed.

School Bans SF Giants and 49ers clothes

Story: North Bay School Bans Popular Team Apparel

While the rest of the country is under the naive assumption that SF stands for San Francisco, in Bay Area schools, it means "scrap free." By banning the apparel, it will not only help curb the gang problem, but it will finally help put an end to teens wearing jerseys to school. We are currently researching if Richmond, VA is experiencing similar problems with students wearing colors from the Double-A affiliate, the Flying Squirrels.

Teen tries to buy urine at elementary school

Story: Teen Gets Community Service in Urine Case

The guy walked into an elementary school, found his way to the bathroom, and tried to buy pee from little boys. We can only assume he needed to pass a urine test, but you gotta think there is a better source. Then, you have to ask yourself how many employees didn't notice a strange 18-year old roaming around an elementary school with an empty piss cup in his hand. Luckily, we have taught our youth not to sell pee to creepy men they meet in the bathroom.

Teacher offers $100 for sex with student in class

Story: Brentwood teacher charged with soliciting student for sex

Try to spot when this combination becomes a bad idea: Alcohol + condoms + $100 bills + horny teacher + underage student. And to think, this guy still has some supporters. It's a good thing he never got to spend his benny's because he'll need them for his lawyer fees.

School bans dictionary!!!

Story: Menifee school panel will review banned dictionary

It's official! The day has finally come when children can't even use a dictionary as a resource. One parent dug through it and found a sexual term, now the whole school is left unable to look up definitions. I can already hear the laughter of education critics from every other country in the world.

NRA backs student expelled for carrying gun in truck

Story: NRA backs Willows student expelled for carrying gun in truck

Only the NRA would be able to justify why a teenage boy should be allowed to keep a loaded firearm in his car during school. The student (who is ironically considering a career in law enforcement) has the habit of going duck hunting before class. I imagine it would have been even more interesting to watch the principal react to a trunk full of dead birds.

California Middle School Evacuated After Science Project Mistaken for Bomb

Story: California Middle School Evacuated After Science Project Mistaken for Bomb

I wonder if they took the time to ask the student if it was a bomb, or just assumed the 11-year concocted an explosive with and empty Pepsi bottle and random wires. But it's now 2010, and we have to start screening every petri dish and homemade volcano that comes through the front doors.

Principal slashed at Calif. Catholic high school

Story: Principal slashed at Calif. Catholic high school

Maybe this is why so many schools are afraid to confront children with behavior problems. I guess it's easier to suspend someone than risk getting involved in a good old fashioned knife fight.

L.A. teachers still owe from $60 million payroll mistake

Story: Two teachers ordered to return more than $148,000 in overpayments

A couple years ago the L.A. Unified School District decided to upgrade its payroll software and it resulted in nearly $60 million worth of overpayments to its employees. Two of the teachers who reaped the most benefits (almost $150,000K between the pair) haven't returned their share and are still on the lamb. We can only assume they don't get cell phone reception in Barbados. In the meantime, thanks to some computer tech who messed up a few zeroes and ones, don't plan on a raise any time soon if you're teaching in L.A.
