School Child Questions Michelle Obama on Immigration

A second grader asks Michelle Obama, the first lady, about immigration laws. The young girl was concerned that President Barrack Obama would deport her mother because her mom does not have papers that would make her a legal citizen of The United States. While the President has been taking measures against illegal immigrants, Mrs. Obama reassured the girl that the government is currently working on it, so that illegal citizens can attain papers in the future.

Is the first lady giving false hope to the many, like this girl, who fear deportation, or will Congress step forward to help make immigrants legal citizens?

Obama unveils $900M plan for schools

One of the ideas not listed in his plan, is to replace teachers with robots.

Teacher accused of getting special needs girl pregnant

Story: D.C. teacher accused of fathering a child with special-needs student

Since the girl was 18, a criminal investigation never took place. I'm not sure if that helped clear the mans conscience though. After all, he was having sex with a student, who happened to be special needs, and it resulted in a future mom-to-be. Let's make sure we all make an effort to not let his guy volunteer at the next Buddy Walk in DC.

Back to School Problems at Burroughs

Story: Back to School Problems at Burroughs

This might be the only school in the country where the swine flu isn't the biggest health concern. Some PTA mothers are actually strapping up with face masks and telling parents to turn around and bring their kids back in a couple days. The school recently had some construction, and the PTA (who also apparently moon-light with the EPA), doesn't feel the air quality is breathable yet. Is it just me, or is staying in school is becoming harder and harder?

D.C. Extends Free STD Testing to High Schools

As long as these tests are accompanied by sex education, then maybe this isn't such a bad idea. Otherwise I could see a few flaws with passing out baskets of condoms and offering free urine tests to teens. Access to all these anonymous hand-outs seems to encourage sexual activity, which is why the school needs to be prepared to show graphic pictures of violent herpes outbreaks to combat any loose-thinking.

Obama's Campaign Promises that are about Education

Story: PolitiFact | The Obameter: Obama's Campaign Promises that are about Education

Politifact has put together a list of Obama's campaign promised dealing with education, and let's you know which ones he's completed, working on, compromised on, or hasn't taken any action on. The vast majority fall into the "No action" column. It's important to remember campaign promises are the reason folks get elected -- this site does a great job of assessing how much farther a candidate has to go to be congruent with their platform.

Big DC fight leads to arrests, injuries

Some reports say this brawl was started by one girl pulling another girls hair. To me this sounds like a decent excuse to get hauled off in a squad car. In a related note, Laila Ali was seen hanging around the police station in hopes to recruit a future world class contender.

Schools stop to watch Obama speech

Most schools across the country halted class to watch the historic presidential inauguration on TV today. (We are still waiting at the tipline to hear from schools that did NOT allow the viewing of this. Come on Mississippi readers, we know you're out there.) The last time the whole country viewed ONE event was 9/11, and before that was when JFK was shot (We are checking with the research department, because the OJ Simpson verdict might qualify). However, the goal is that this new president can inspire a nation of students and educators to make changes and strive for improvement. When education becomes a priority, and our public school system stops failing, then I guess our days at DetentionSlip will be numbered.

Why? What's wrong with the public schools?

D.C. Students Get First Reward Checks

Story: D.C. Students Get First Reward Checks, but Some Come Up Short

If you don't remember the original story, D.C. decided that the only way to get kids to study and come to class, was to give them paychecks. Even though a payroll glitch caused most of the checks to be short, some kids got up to $100 for get this- being a student. At this point, Frito Lay and Mountain Dew better get some reps in these schools and start filling them up with vending machines. I mean, what else is a 12-year old going to spend money on?

Bus drivers crash, cuss, abuse and lose

Crazy! School bus drivers can't get it right today!

It all started when a New York driver got lost before school and took a busload to students on a 4 1/2 hour detour! For those not great in math, that is more than half of school day kids spent as the driver was trying to figure things out. While he was busy getting lost, a Connecticut driver had his feet kicked up at home, not realizing he left a girl on the bus for the second time! Luckily, it was only the first time for an Indiana driver who did the same thing! Parents love hearing that their 4 and 5-year old sons or daughters are trapped unsupervised inside a school bus at some parking lot. At least they were safe, which was more than the dozen kids in Colorado can say after smashing into the back of a semi. I can see how huge trucks can get overlooked while you're driving. Unless, like the DC bus aide, he was too busy sexually assaulting special needs girls on the bus. Hope you're proud of yourself man! Too bad the Kansas driver who made suggestive comments to the last girl on the bus didn't get the memo that this behavior is completely unacceptable. Oh, and the driver who fought two students in Tennessee might also want to bone up on school bus etiquette.

So wow! A lot in the world of school buses today. Who would have thought the kids don't even have to get to school before the trouble starts? Apparently it's not hard to pass your CDL test nowadays.

D.C. To Pay Students For Attendance, Behavior

Story: D.C. To Pay Middle School Students For Attendance, Behavior

The article quotes that this is, "in an effort to get them to focus on school." It sounds to me like we are teaching them at a young age that money is the driving force behind everything. The only incentive for being a responsible student, is a financial gain. It's just one big bribe. Again, I would like to think there is a better way to invest $3 million towards education.
