North Carolina School District Bans Corporal Punishment

Rockingham County North Carolina joins 69 other NC districts in banning corporal punishment, the infliction of pain -- usually by paddling or whipping. North Carolina is one of the only places in the developed world that still allows Corporal Punishment in schools. The United States stands alone in industrialized countries that allow CP and NC is one of only 20 US States that allows Corporal Punishment. Every year over 250,000 students are hit at least once by educators in US public schools.

DetentionSlip.org commends Rockingham County for joining us here in the future.

Texas High School Suspends Cheerleader for Refusing To Cheer for the Guy Who Raped Her

We get a lot of garbage coming out of Texas, but this is perhaps the worst yet. A high school cheerleader was punished after she refused to cheer the name of the guy who raped her.

The student was accused of raping the cheerleader, to which he pled guilty to a lesser charge of assault. The school of course couldn't keep a star athlete off the basketball team, and was outraged when the cheerleader refused to cheer out his name while he was making free throws.

WHAT THE F&^%^!!!

Students and Schools Sue for School Funding

Nine school districts and over 60 children including 16-year-old Maya Robles-Wong as lead plaintiff filed a lawsuit against the California government, regarding its failure to support its public schools. This is because California is far behind other states in funding education, needing to hire another 104,000 staff members to meet the average.

But if the school districts win, Sacramento would have to fund schools based on the law, so that the city and government would have to supply books, physical education, competent teachers, English instruction, science labs, and special education.

US House Hearings on Corporal Punishment in Schools

This past week, The Committee on Education and Labor held a hearing on Corporal Punishment in US Schools. This is ground breaking progress as it the first time in 18 years the government has discussed this issue.

Experts testified about the ineffectiveness of corporal punishment and the deleterious effects it can have on students. Both Democrats and Republicans agreed this needs to end, and the committee has promised to introduce a bill that would institute a federal ban on corporal punishment in US schools.

95 of the countries 100 largest school districts outlaw the practice. Even in Texas, which beats over 40,000 kids a year, the largest districts of Houston and Austin have banned the practice.

DetentionSlip.org, along with The United Nations, PTA and other organizations opposes corporal punishment in schools. We have set up a Facebook Page which we encourage you to "Like" and help spread the word - raising awareness around this issue will be crucial in the weeks to come.

NYC Agrees to Shut the 'Rubber Rooms'

'Rubber Rooms' -- the places where suspended teachers sit and do nothing and get paid while waiting for a decision on their case (the average time being 18 months) -- will be shut down by December 2010. This has a been a massive debacle, wasting millions of dollars a year. A great victory and long anticipated reform.

Mass. School Bus Driver Charged With Raping 8th Grader

Story: Mass. School Bus Driver Charged With Raping 8th Grader

There may have been a language barrier, but it clearly needed to be defined what the difference is between giving students a ride vs. giving students a ride. It probably got a little suspicious when the girl NEVER got off at her stop, and was always the last one on the bus. Hopefully there is a prison near his route, because he may as well call that his last stop.

Teen Cheerleader Fined $27,750 for File Sharing 37 Songs

Whitney Harper, now a college senior, was fined $27k for sharing 37 songs when she was 14 by the RIAA. While we love sharing Backstreet Boys mp3's as much as the next #1 education news bloggers.. It seems folks should just subscribe to Napster or one of the other ~$20 / month services that give you unlimited access to music and avoid this hassle by the music police.

She is lucky however, in the first RIAA case to be awarded a settlement a Minnesota jury ordered a woman to pay $1.92 million for file sharing 24 songs (though the judge in the case reduced the award to $54,000 — $2,250 a track).

Florida Girl, 6, Handcuffed After Temper Tantrum at School

Story: Florida Girl, 6, Handcuffed After Temper Tantrum at School

It's good to know our elementary schools have officers on duty to arrest little kids when they throw fits. Maybe we should just start dedicating wings of the school to in-house prison cells?

High school busted on trademark infringement

Story: Seminole school dodges trademark infringement bullet

When the school decided to develop a new logo for their mascot, the entire town must have been oblivious to the fact that they completely ripped off Dodge's Ram. Don't they teach about plagiarism in high school? Being so close to Orlando, I'm actually surprised they didn't just try to get away with being the Mickey Mouses.

Student, 12, Arrested For Doodling On Desk

Story: Student, 12, Arrested For Doodling On Desk

WOW! Some of the desks I grew up around barely had a square inch to spare because of all the graffiti on them. This girl pens her name with an erasable marker and she's thrown in the slammer within minutes. Once again we're creating criminals out of children. Maybe this should serve as an eye-opener that schools need to completely abolish writing utensils and provide laptops for every student?!

Teacher offers $100 for sex with student in class

Story: Brentwood teacher charged with soliciting student for sex

Try to spot when this combination becomes a bad idea: Alcohol + condoms + $100 bills + horny teacher + underage student. And to think, this guy still has some supporters. It's a good thing he never got to spend his benny's because he'll need them for his lawyer fees.

Student faces charges in Brecksville High School food fight

Story: Student faces charges in Brecksville High School food fight

This is not the first time children have been arrested for a food fight. Throwing spaghetti serves the same hard time as throwing punches in some states. We can only hope that the leader of this cafeteria gang doesn't make accomplices during her suspension...only to terrorize the city with pizza boats and cinnamon sticks.

Judge Orders Truants to Carry GPS Tracking Device

Story: Judge Orders Truants to Carry GPS Tracking Device

This is not the first time Texas decided that the best way to curb tardiness was to strap its students with GPS devices. The idea might work, but I suggest they invest in teleportation to make it easier for children to warp to school.

If school field trips don't include liquor store visits, you have to take matters into your own hands. Plus, sometimes the weekend doesn't come soon enough.

Story: N.H. teacher accused of robbing two Mass. banks

I always thought that teachers get paid during their breaks. Evidently it wasn't enough for this guy to buy all his Christmas presents this year. I just hope he doesn't ask his students what they did over the holidays.

Dallas high school student arrested for masturbating in class

Story: Northwest Dallas high school student arrested, accused of masturbating in art class

According to the report, "The student began to moan and said "aye mami" before beginning to masturbate fervently in front of the teacher and classmates..." My only hunch is that his art class was out of rubber cement.

Principal accused of raping, molesting 11-year old girl

Story: Elementary principal in Polk accused of raping, molesting girl

If you are looking for a reason to lose sleep tonight, consider these facts: This man is an elementary school principal. He has been touching a girl inappropriately since she was in kindergarten. Every day of work for him is another opportunity to build a relationship with young girls. I wonder how many of them he introduced the game "I'll show you mine if you show me yours."

Detroit parents want teachers jailed over low test scores

Story: Detroit parents want DPS teachers, officials jailed over low test scores

After learning that some local schools ranked the worst in the nation in math scores, parents responded by demanding the teachers go to jail for their lack of successful results. More sound suggestions might include providing additional training or hiring better qualified teachers, but it's obvious this town wants their teachers burned at the stake. You gotta wonder if they are just taking their frustrations out because the Lions have had so many consecutive losing seasons.

Teacher accused of offering teens wine, sex

Story: Teacher accused of offering teens wine, sex

For most guys, this doesn't sound like such a bad offer- Why don't you come over for some wine and sex? But when you're a 15-year old boy getting pinned against a wall by your friend's drunk mom, it probably gets a little weird. The sex never happened though. Five years from now, I wonder who will regret this night more- the woman or the boy?

Wis. teacher's aide accused of having sex with 12-year-old boy

Story: Wis. teacher's aide accused of having sex with 12-year-old boy

Who needs the Make-a-Wish Foundation when there are teachers willing to put out to pre-teens? Looking back, I wonder if her little fling with a 12-year old will be worth 60 years in prison?
