Sex ED

The recent scandal at Miramonte School is underscored by a recent AP investigative report that found 2,570 sex offenses committed by educators between 2001 and 2005 for which the educators were terminated. This calculates to nearly 3 offenses per school day across the nation. The report also suggests that the offenses are under-reported across the nation. There are nearly 3 million teachers in the US and although the sex offenders represent a very small percentage of the profession, the conduct of a few casts a long shadow on the profession.

Thank you Dave Tompkins

There is no news release for this blog...I ask that you indulge me today as I write a long overdue thank you to the man who inspired me to become a biology teacher and to whom I am deeply grateful. I grew up during the perfect storm for science education. Post-Sputnik era support for science education with plenty of funding and research as well as the push to identify gifted children and place them in an accelerated curriculum that was discovery and inquiry based. Our community enjoyed a true partnership with the local General Electric Plant in Lawrence Park that resulted in state-of-the-art science facilities in a brand new junior/senior high school. All these stars aligned...but without an incredible group of science teachers (Spencer, Luce, Kring, Buzanowski, and Dave Tompkins), the opportunity to learn science in depth and by using the scientific method would have been lost. Of all of these great teachers, Mr. Tompkins was the finest. He taught me the art and science of teaching and a love for the life sciences in particular. As a first year teacher in a neighboring school district, I met with Mr. Tompkins, the man with the broad shoulders and eternal grin...the man that inspired me in ninth grade, coached our junior high football team and varsity swim team, and later went on to earn his doctoral degree and serve first as high school principal and later in a leadership role at a local university. We talked, in his classroom after school one day about teaching. I was worried that I wasn't reaching every student. He told me that I probably wouldn't...that he knew he hadn't. But he also said that I needed to be sure I reached out to every kid every day. Later in my career that spanned 35 years in public education, when I was teaching at the university level, I know that I channeled him in advice I would give aspiring science teachers...always be well prepared, be creative, listen to your students and watch them because they will teach you so much. Engage them with science as method and content. And, always be the one reaching out to them even when it seems they are unwilling to reach back. Dr. Tompkins passed away a few weeks ago, and when I left the funeral home, I knew this letter was long overdue. So here it is and I hope that for all of you who have been inspired by great teachers, you won't wait to write to them.

Virginia principal suspended for fetus dolls

Story: Virginia school principal suspended after employee hands out pro-life fetus dolls to students

Nothing spells sex education better than dead babies! Now every time these third graders think about having sex, they will be forced to look at their life-like fetus dolls and remember the consequences.

Alabama teacher uses Obama assassination to teach math

Story: Geometry teacher who used Obama assassination to teach angles placed on leave

Unless we're letting extremist groups write our texts, I can't imagine this sample problem showing up in the pages of a geometry book. Of all the examples that could be used to teach about angles, you've got to wonder how encouraging students to think about murdering the president is the most effective. Any chance this teacher voted Republican?

California teacher accused of allowing sex in class

Story: California teacher accused of allowing sex in class

Occasionally, if there is time left in the day, teachers will allow students to complete their homework. If you are really lucky, your teacher will allow you to engage in oral sex with a classmate.

Anti-Tea Party Teacher Back in the Classroom

Jason Levin, a middle school teacher and political activist, is some hot water over his website "Crash the Tea Party". He wants people to infiltrate tea party rallies, and do some monkey wrenching.

Some parents are upset.. However, this is done on his own time, on a personal website. Being a teacher doesn't mean you forfeit your rights to free speech or to take part in the political process. Further, this guy is someone who is using new media to be politically active -- in my mind, the kind of guy I'd want teaching my kids how to use the internet.

They are also mad because he sent some tweets during school hours -- in my mind, this is a huge over reaction -- technology is here, teachers have lives outside of school, and we should be stoked to have our kids being instructed by folks who have a grasp of how to leverage the internet...

NY Teacher Steals Lunches from Students

How to Make Extra Money as a Teacher

I had a chance to catch up with Doug Fath, a former substitute teacher who now makes over 6 figures a year in passive income (working less than 6 hours per week) by investing in student housing. He's now put together a ton of free videos explaining how he's doing this and how teachers (and others) can benefit from his system.

This is perfect for any teachers or parents looking to make some additional income this year. Very cool!

Teacher suspended over Black History Month photos

Story: 3 LA Teachers Removed Over Choice of Black Heroes

OJ Simpson was a gridiron great who not only set several NFL records, but successfully transitioned into a notable acting career with commercials and movies. Dennis Rodman was one of the most prolific rebounders in NBA history who has been a key member of many championship teams. RuPaul can be seen as a torchbearer in the gay community for not only becoming a well-recognized cross-dresser, but served in lead positions in a number of major network tv shows. These individuals are among a long list of African-Americans who were celebrated in an LA school recently. They also happen to be the reason three teachers are suspended right now. The superintendent fails to recognize their great accomplishments, and believes these teachers need punished for highlighting their success.

Students Accused Of Trying To Poison Teacher

Story: GA Students Accused Of Trying To Poison Teacher

We can only hope that much like a Shakespeare classic, that the teacher was poisoned out of love...twice.

VIDEO: Tom Yorke Raps For Education in Indiana

If there is one thing we love more than shaking down the education system, it's teachers rapping about state tests... Brandon Curl, a 7th/8th Grade Science Teacher at Gary Lighthouse Charter School sent us this video.

P.S. Is that Radioheads Thom Yorke at 1:36? You decide...

Teacher Accused Of Giving Student Concussion

Throwing kids against doors might be one way to problem solve, but every silver lining has a touch of gray right? The teacher was probably aware that very few people who suffer from concussions actually die, but in the future, we might want to explore some alternative methods of discipline. Just a thought.

Two teachers, One chair lap dance causes uproar

Story: Teachers' Lap Dance Video Sparks Uproar at Canadian High School

I guess I just have one question- Why would a striptease/lap dance during a school assembly ever seem like a good idea to perform in front of an audience of high school kids? I think we know exactly where to find this teacher after she loses her job...and I can only imagine how many seniors will be filling their wallets with dollar bills.

Teacher accused of getting special needs girl pregnant

Story: D.C. teacher accused of fathering a child with special-needs student

Since the girl was 18, a criminal investigation never took place. I'm not sure if that helped clear the mans conscience though. After all, he was having sex with a student, who happened to be special needs, and it resulted in a future mom-to-be. Let's make sure we all make an effort to not let his guy volunteer at the next Buddy Walk in DC.

Teacher suspended without pay for spanking student

Story: Teacher suspended without pay for spanking student

Corporal punishment is still very legal in Alabama. However, the parents can request that their child not be spanked at school. This teacher decided to throw the rule book right out the window and start swinging. I guess some people still believe that "a paddle a day keeps the doctor away."

Teacher suspended over Facebook comments

Story: Apex teacher suspended after parents question Facebook comments

After a classroom conversation about evolution, a child thought it would be a nice gesture to give his teacher a Bible. Rather than handle the situation like a mature adult, she decided to open up a Facebook rant and referred to the incident as a hate crime. Her friends chimed in with replies about "ignorant Southern rednecks" and swastikas. I guess some teacher aren't familiar with the concept of behind closed doors.

RI Superintendendent fires entire staff at high school

Story: Central Falls to fire every high school teacher

In one big swipe, every teacher lost their job at this failing school. It's a bold move, but the teachers decided that they didn't want to work harder. I wonder if the Superintendent plans to fill in for a couple days and lead a classroom of almost 1,000 students until new teachers are ready to move in?

Teacher Accused of Shooting Two Principals

After hearing he wasn't getting his job back next year, this teacher decided to go down in a blaze of glory and start shooting any principal he saw. Unfortunately, it's not 1850 and you can't just jump on your horse and ride out of town scott free. With double attempted homicide charges on your resume, I doubt any other school will be looking to pick up his contract either.

Teacher Suspended After Locking Student in Closet

Story: Teacher Suspended After Locking Student in Closet

If there is a manual on behavior management, I'd be curious to see which page it suggests to lock a student in a utility closet with the lights off. Sometimes the line must be blurry between discipling students properly and acting out a scene from an M Night Shyamalan movie.

Teachers give students pretend Xanax

Story: Westchase teachers learn a lesson: Say 'no' to mints in pill bottles

In some Florida schools, the teachers think it's cute to encourage students to down a bottle of pills when they get stressed during their standardized tests. The children were handed little bottles of prescription pills filled with mints. They are being taught at an early age that when life hands you a challenge, their is a drug that can cure it! I can't wait to point fingers when we find these kids years later in a pool of their own vomit after over-dosing on Oxycodone.
