Imported from Detroit

We were delighted to watch our President interacting with these young scientists from around the USA and saw video of him firing off one youngster's marshmallow cannon in the White House! Adequate funding for STEM is long overdue...we need to revisit the investment in STEM to rival our post-Sputnik days. So much potential in young minds to tap and enrich! Time to put away the crosswords and seek-and-finds as methods to teach science.

Obama fumbles town hall question about private schools

When asked why he didn't send his daughters to a public school in DC he fumbles..
In one breath he says DC schools aren't up to par. Then he says that there are individual good public schools in DC and in every city in the country. Then he says its hard to get into such schools, due to lotteries, etc. Then he says "given his position" he could get his girls into any school. Then he sort of mumbles about how all schools need to be better and that DC schools aren't there yet.

Don't you think that just by virtue of the President putting his kids in public school they would step it up? Put faith in the Public School system.

Should people in positions of power and privileged use the public school system? Should politicians?

Obama Induced Sleep

Despite President Obama's high status and inspirational words, he still managed to put one graduate asleep during his commencement speech at Kalamazoo High School.

Alabama teacher uses Obama assassination to teach math

Story: Geometry teacher who used Obama assassination to teach angles placed on leave

Unless we're letting extremist groups write our texts, I can't imagine this sample problem showing up in the pages of a geometry book. Of all the examples that could be used to teach about angles, you've got to wonder how encouraging students to think about murdering the president is the most effective. Any chance this teacher voted Republican?

Obama unveils $900M plan for schools

One of the ideas not listed in his plan, is to replace teachers with robots.

Missouri Schools Complain About Obama Logo School Supplies

Story: Missouri Schools Complain About Obama Logo School Supplies

The above picture is a notebook that the students were given; the pencils are very similar. Understandably, angry Republicans are complaining that our youth have to be subjected to the Obama brand. More surprising might be that Obama is actually being branded like Nike or Pepsi. The company claims it was an accidental error, but we know who they voted for. By the way, what does a pile of coins have to do with a public school anyway?

Obama wants to cut back summer vacations

Story: Obama would curtail summer vacation

Obama is pitching ideas to get rid of the one thing teachers and kids both look forward to every year: summer vacation. Some research suggests that the reason US students are academically behind other developed countries is because we don't spend enough time in the classroom. I argue that it is because our schools have become boring. So what better way to get kids pumped about education than by adding three more months of it! My biggest concern is that without a summer vacation, this greatly compromises everyone's generic yearbook entries.

School Students Sing Praises of President Obama

Story: Elementary School Students Taught to Sing Praises of President Obama

In an almost cult-like fashion, a 2nd grade class in New Jersey can be seen on YouTube singing their oath of praise to President Barack Obama. The video was filmed early in the year (well before Obama had a chance to do anything in office), but has just hit the web and started a wildfire of criticism. The school even went into lock down because the Principal was receiving death threats from irate parents. FoxNews will have you believe the teacher was creating a Hitler-like following of young drones, and others say it was just a creative way to congratulate Obama in his recent success of presidency. You be the judge! [Video Here]Italic

After uproar over Obama speech, Texas school leader cancels Bush field trip

Story: Texas school leader cancels Bush field trip

If you're looking for a fair and balanced education, you might want to reconsider the Lone Star state. Last week, the school did not allow its students to watch Obama's speech. However, they did have a field trip booked for 600 children to hear George W. Bush speak at Cowboys stadium. After realizing the actions make the school look like complete idiots, the decision was made to cancel the trip. God Bless Texas.

VIDEO: President Obama's Message for America's Students

The "controversial" speech from President Obama to the school kids of the USA.

What do you think? Marxist Propaganda or a good message for our students?

SHOCK! Obama Speech Leaked!!!

SOURCE: Prepared Remarks of President Barack Obama Back to School Event

In a shocking discovery, parents across the nation rushed to make plans to pull students out of school tomorrow when President Obama will give his address from a school in Virginia while it is simulcast to schools nationwide. The whitehouse (actually as promised) leaked the speech IN FULL TEXT 24 hours before Obama was to go live.

We had suspected he would use this as a platform to spew his socialist ideals, and we were right! LOOK at some of these gems we found, CAN YOU BELIEVE THE NERVE!
"being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. You won’t click with every teacher. Not every homework assignment will seem completely relevant to your life right this minute. And you won’t necessarily succeed at everything the first time you try."
How dare he tell our children that success is hard work!
"You’ll need the knowledge and problem-solving skills you learn in science and math to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS, and to develop new energy technologies and protect our environment. You’ll need the insights and critical thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination, and make our nation more fair and more free. You’ll need the creativity and ingenuity you develop in all your classes to build new companies that will create new jobs and boost our economy. "
Encouraging them to find a cure for AIDS and to build new companies -- all part of his Marxist worldview.

Of course, he really SHOULD have left the god talk out -- why do you need to sign off with "God Bless America"?

Some Parents Choose Not to Allow Their Kids to Hear Obama's National Address

President Obama will be giving an online speech to students across the country next week. Some parents are deciding that they don't want their children to be part of history and sit the event out. A primary objective of the Obama campaign was reaching out to people everywhere. He is now our leader and has been able to inspire more citizens than any president in recent decades. Old, white republicans are gonna have to get over that fact and let their 8-year old kids make up their own minds about watching the president speak. For goodness sake, if the guy can convince a few more students to stay in school and start caring about their education, give him a chance.

Obama's Campaign Promises that are about Education

Story: PolitiFact | The Obameter: Obama's Campaign Promises that are about Education

Politifact has put together a list of Obama's campaign promised dealing with education, and let's you know which ones he's completed, working on, compromised on, or hasn't taken any action on. The vast majority fall into the "No action" column. It's important to remember campaign promises are the reason folks get elected -- this site does a great job of assessing how much farther a candidate has to go to be congruent with their platform.

FACT CHECK: Are US students really that bad?

Story: FACT CHECK: Are US students really that bad?

Just because our test scores are lower, drop-out rates higher, and we're learning at a slower rate than many other developed countries, does that really mean the U.S. schools suck? DetentionSlip has been pointing out many of the flaws in our public education system, but it's only scratching the surface. Readers, this can be your time to chime in and voice your concerns. Looking forward to the commentary.

Student can't dance with Obama mask in show

A fifth grade student wants to do his own version of a Saturday Night Live skit featuring Barack Obama dancing for his school talent show. Some parents feel it is inappropriate and offensive. We are thinking hard to find out how this could possibly be controversial, except for maybe there are a lot of McCain supporters. The boy won't do the dance without the mask, because as he wisely put it, "If I don't have the mask," he said, "it's just some kid up there dancing around."

Some School Children Miss Inauguration

Story: Some School Children Miss Inauguration

The principal told the teachers to only show it if it "tied in with their curriculum." Evidently the most historical presidential inauguration in our country's history doesn't seem like an educational piece. As you can imagine, there are many groups unhappy about this. It makes you wonder what else some of our schools are holding back on?

Schools stop to watch Obama speech

Most schools across the country halted class to watch the historic presidential inauguration on TV today. (We are still waiting at the tipline to hear from schools that did NOT allow the viewing of this. Come on Mississippi readers, we know you're out there.) The last time the whole country viewed ONE event was 9/11, and before that was when JFK was shot (We are checking with the research department, because the OJ Simpson verdict might qualify). However, the goal is that this new president can inspire a nation of students and educators to make changes and strive for improvement. When education becomes a priority, and our public school system stops failing, then I guess our days at DetentionSlip will be numbered.

New York School Renames Itself For Obama

Story: New York School Renames Itself For Obama

It's not that DetentionSlip doesn't have faith that president elect Obama will make an impact, but the city of Miami also invested their hopes that Jose Canseco would one day become the greatest baseball player ever when they began naming everything in the city after him. The lesson here: let's allow Barack to spread his wings a little before we toss him into the air to fly.

Alabama Principal Bans Confederate Flag Shirts

Story: East Alabama Principal Bans Confederate Flag Shirts

Seems like those Duke boys were causing a stir after Mr. Obama was elected president. The south is just gonna have to get over the fact that their leader will be a black man. But what is the real problem here? Is it t-shirts or tolerance?
