Adequate funding for STEM is long overdue...we need to revisit the investment in STEM to rival our post-Sputnik days. So much potential in young minds to tap and enrich! Obama fumbles town hall question about private schools

When asked why he didn't send his daughters to a public school in DC he fumbles..
In one breath he says DC schools aren't up to par. Then he says that there are individual good public schools in DC and in every city in the country. Then he says its hard to get into such schools, due to lotteries, etc. Then he says "given his position" he could get his girls into any school. Then he sort of mumbles about how all schools need to be better and that DC schools aren't there yet.

Don't you think that just by virtue of the President putting his kids in public school they would step it up? Put faith in the Public School system.

Should people in positions of power and privileged use the public school system? Should politicians?

Unless we're letting extremist groups write our texts, I can't imagine this sample problem showing up in the pages of a geometry book. Of all the examples that could be used to teach about angles, you've got to wonder how encouraging students to think about murdering the president is the most effective. Any chance this teacher voted Republican?

Obama is pitching ideas to get rid of the one thing teachers and kids both look forward to every year: summer vacation. Some research suggests that the reason US students are academically behind other developed countries is because we don't spend enough time in the classroom. I argue that it is because our schools have become boring. So what better way to get kids pumped about education than by adding three more months of it! My biggest concern is that without a summer vacation, this greatly compromises everyone's generic yearbook entries.

In an almost cult-like fashion, a 2nd grade class in New Jersey can be seen on YouTube singing their oath of praise to President Barack Obama. The video was filmed early in the year (well before Obama had a chance to do anything in office), but has just hit the web and started a wildfire of criticism. The school even went into lock down because the Principal was receiving death threats from irate parents. However, they did have a field trip booked for 600 children to hear George W. Bush speak at Cowboys stadium. A fifth grade student wants to do his own version of a Saturday Night Live skit featuring Barack Obama dancing for his school talent show. Some parents feel it is inappropriate and offensive. We are thinking hard to find out how this could possibly be controversial, except for maybe there are a lot of McCain supporters. Most schools across the country halted class to watch the historic presidential inauguration on TV today. (We are still waiting at the tipline to hear from schools that did NOT allow the viewing of this. Come on Mississippi readers, we know you're out there.) The last time the whole country viewed ONE event was 9/11, and before that was when JFK was shot (We are checking with the research department, because the OJ Simpson verdict might qualify). However, the goal is that this new president can inspire a nation of students and educators to make changes and strive for improvement. When education becomes a priority, and our public school system stops failing, then I guess our days at DetentionSlip will be numbered.

It's not that DetentionSlip doesn't have faith that president elect Obama will make an impact, but the city of Miami also invested their hopes that Jose Canseco would one day become the greatest baseball player ever when they began naming everything in the city after him.
