A pox on your people

Once again, sports bring out the best of us! At a recent hockey game between the University of Minnesota-Duluth and North Dakota, fans "peppered" the Fighting Sioux with war woops and small pox blankets. The pox blankets were in historical reference to claims that white settlers infested the native tribes with blankets carrying the deadly disease. Time to pull the goalie on this nonsense. Ban the fans from all future games until they act like normal hockey fans...just get drunk and start fights!

No wrongdoing in coach's alleged student whippings, officials say

Remember the Jackson Mississippi coach who was busted for whipping players on the basketball team for missing free throws? The school district is asking that the federal lawsuit be dropped, and claims there has been no wrongdoing in the case.

That there is even any discussion over whether it would ever be ok to hit students is remarkable and shows just how far folks in this district and state have to come. Yes, if you are from Mississippi, you are allowing students to be beaten in your state.

Texas High School Suspends Cheerleader for Refusing To Cheer for the Guy Who Raped Her

We get a lot of garbage coming out of Texas, but this is perhaps the worst yet. A high school cheerleader was punished after she refused to cheer the name of the guy who raped her.

The student was accused of raping the cheerleader, to which he pled guilty to a lesser charge of assault. The school of course couldn't keep a star athlete off the basketball team, and was outraged when the cheerleader refused to cheer out his name while he was making free throws.

WHAT THE F&^%^!!!

Northern VA High School Soccer Referees Under Scrutinty

According to Northern Virginia soccer coaches, the referees aren't doing their jobs correctly and do not make the right calls. These mistakes interfere with the games' outcomes. And here's the reason why...the number of games per night exceeds the number of experienced refs. There is about 60 games a night, so finding a qualified and trained ref is hard to come by. One suggestion is an evaluation system for the refs, so each knows where he or she stands and can improve his or her problem areas. This will hopefully ensure accurate calls in the future.

What do you think?

Teacher suspended over Black History Month photos

Story: 3 LA Teachers Removed Over Choice of Black Heroes

OJ Simpson was a gridiron great who not only set several NFL records, but successfully transitioned into a notable acting career with commercials and movies. Dennis Rodman was one of the most prolific rebounders in NBA history who has been a key member of many championship teams. RuPaul can be seen as a torchbearer in the gay community for not only becoming a well-recognized cross-dresser, but served in lead positions in a number of major network tv shows. These individuals are among a long list of African-Americans who were celebrated in an LA school recently. They also happen to be the reason three teachers are suspended right now. The superintendent fails to recognize their great accomplishments, and believes these teachers need punished for highlighting their success.

School Bans SF Giants and 49ers clothes

Story: North Bay School Bans Popular Team Apparel

While the rest of the country is under the naive assumption that SF stands for San Francisco, in Bay Area schools, it means "scrap free." By banning the apparel, it will not only help curb the gang problem, but it will finally help put an end to teens wearing jerseys to school. We are currently researching if Richmond, VA is experiencing similar problems with students wearing colors from the Double-A affiliate, the Flying Squirrels.

Student sent home from school for wearing Colts jersey

Story: Colts Jersey Causes Clash at La. School

A Louisiana high school lifted its dress code policy and allowed students to wear black and gold to celebrate the Saints going to the Super Bowl. One Indianapolis native decided to wear his Colts jersey instead. Since students don't have rights inside of public schools, he was immediately told that he was disobeying the principal. Who would have thought that the Super Bowl would have such an impact on the education process?

Indianapolis Schools Want 2-hour Delay After Super Bowl

Story: Indy's Schools Want 2-hour Delay After Super Bowl

Since the whole city will be watching the Colts in the big game, it will make it nearly impossible to wake up on-time for work Monday. The Super Bowl will end around 11:00 at night, and that's waaaaaayyyy too late to even hear the alarm the next morning. The only solution? Delay class! If this doesn't send an early message to children that athletics trumps education, then I'm not sure how much more clear we can make it.

School Bans Fans From Basketball Games

Story: School Bans Fans From Basketball Games

The school has a sure fire plan to increase the popularity of its basketball team: To only allow parents of the players to attend the games. Way to make high school fun! I wonder if any colleges or pro teams will be adopting this model if the team starts a winning streak?

Pregnant Fort Worth teen draws flak after fighting suspension from volleyball

Story: Pregnant Fort Worth teen draws flak after fighting suspension from volleyball

So here's the story- A Texas teen gets pregnant--> her coach doesn't play her in the volleyball game--> her parents begin filing civil suits against the school. So whose side are you on? The coach who protected the safety of a baby, or the parents who are trying to expose loop-holes in Title IX by-laws? How would we be talking about this story if the article was titled "Pregnant Teen Loses Baby After Being Spiked in the Stomach With a Volleyball"?

Student sues school over dodgeball injury

If you can dodge a ball, you can dodge a lawsuit!

Story:
Injured kid hits school in dim gym lawsuit after dodgeball accident

Dodgeball was unofficially banned from schools about three years ago. That left gym teachers to be creative. That's why this class decided to use harder, less-giving soccer balls to launch at kids. The result? Busted teeth and a trip to court. Haven't schools learned that anything that was fun 10 years ago is now considered a dangerous threat to child safety? Who would have thought a game that encourages athletic kids to whip balls as hard as they can at the faces of nonathletic kids gets frowned upon?

8th-grader suspended for wild Bengals haircut

Story: 8th-grader suspended for wild Bengals haircut

Usually when a local pro sports team is playing well, everyone supports their success. That's what this boy was doing when he decided to shave a 'B' for Bengals into his hair. But without fail, the principal deemed this to be "extreme" and "distracting," and now he can't come to school. We can only assume the principal is a Steelers fan.

Mandarin High coach charged in 'prank'

Story: Mandarin High coach charged in 'prank'

What did we learn here? The next time you try to rob a convenience store with a mask on and a shotgun pointed at the clerk (only to realize you're not getting into the safe), you CAN'T just go back in a couple minutes later and claim you were joking. If that were true I don't think over-crowding in prisons would be a problem.

Girl gets $25,000 for kickball injury

Story: $25k payout after girl hurt playing kickball in North Mankato

Her teacher used a folder for a base and the girl broke her ankle sliding on it. Rather than "walking it off" or "rubbing some dirt on it," her family decided the best way to nurse this injury back to health was suing the district for $25,000. Great! Now the school will never be able to afford real bases!

Fla. school district restricts athletes' clothing

Story: Fla. school district restricts athletes' clothing

In Florida, it regularly reaches 100 degrees outside. That is hot. As a tradition, the athletes don't practice wearing extra layers. In fact, it's common to see the girls running in sports bras and the boys with their shirts off. As awesome of a sight that might be for classmates and pedophiles alike, a couple parents recently complained so of course a stricter dress code is now being enforced. I anticipate these same parents will be the first ones pointing fingers at the school when a student dies of heat exhaustion.

Uniform violation costs cross country team title

Story: Uniform violation costs Bulls title

Everybody who plays sports in Baltimore should know that Rule 9, Section 6, Article 1b of the National Federation of High Schools rule book states: "Items displaying seams stitched on the outside of the garment in a visible contrasting color to the undergarment will be illegal beginning with the 2009-10 school year." Possibly next to steroids, I can't think of a worse mistake a high school athlete can make.
