Beauty rest

A ninth grade student was suspended from Mustang High School for pursuing her passion for photography!
Actually, the student caught a substitute teacher taking a bit of a cat nap during class. The issue at hand was the use of the cell phone during school to capture this learning moment. Given the tempo of the typical school day and the dazzling curriculum we tend to offer students, it is no wonder that the teacher was just overwhelmed. It may have been after a nutritious high-carb lunch at the cafeteria, or perhaps the teacher was modeling for students the need to get a good 8 hours of sleep each day/night. School spokesperson Mary Leaver had a different take (this speaks for itself...we couldn't make this up)

" We understand the importance of these devices, but we have to maintain a learning environment."

Going Mobile: A Cell of an Idea!

Guest post by Colleen Ruggieri

“You’re not really going to let your students use cell phones in your classroom, are you?! They’re impossible to monitor!” These are the responses I’ve received when I’ve told people that my students use IPODs and cell phones on a daily basis in my high school English class. I understand the concern—after all, it can be difficult to see every screen while facilitating a classroom of students. However, after allowing students to plug in and connect with the real world, I have found that the results far outweigh the negatives.

How many teachers have dreamed of having a classroom full of computers? In most high schools, computers are housed in labs, and teachers must take turns and sign up on selected dates. While this certainly creates equity, it does not create a sense of immediacy and connectivity with curriculum and life beyond the classroom.

This year, while my students were studying The Scarlet Letter, the media coverage of Tiger Woods’ infidelity hit the world by storm. My students made real world connections with their phones and Ipods as they read online news sources about the scandal. Learners analyzed articles for sensationalism and bias and then went on to make text-based connections with the novel. And guess what? They actually had fun doing it.

Sadly, somewhere along the line, this element of joy in the learning process dies in many secondary classrooms. Having a room full of mobile devices brings, as students would say, the “sexy back” into learning—and eliminates the “I wish the lab was available today” woes of teachers who do not have adequate equipment.

Another amazing way in which mobile devices can be used is for assessment purposes. Want to know if students are progressing? Have them use their phones to complete surveys. If it’s within the budget, consider software response systems for easy use on the Ipods. What a great way to save grading time and to garner immediate results.

Is it possible that students will multitask and surf the web when they should be completing an assignment? Yes! However, just as many teachers have checked emails while taking graduate classes. We are a society of multitaskers. Mobile devices are great for learning, and they provide tools that most teachers could never afford in the classroom. Yes, it takes work to successfully integrate and not merely grab student attention with gadgets. With authentic tech integration, however, teachers and students grow together—and these real world tools can bring fresh life and appreciation for the “classics” that are all too often rotting on dusty old bookshelves.

Chubby teacher stripped in front of class

Story: Teacher filmed stripping in front of class reprimanded

As a way to ease his rowdy class, this teacher removed his shirt and began rapping and dancing around the room. This technique is commonly used in strip clubs and results in dollar bills being stuffed in the pants. It's also a great way to gross out a classroom of 14-year olds. As innocent as this may sound, Mr. Rouse was also accused of threatening to throw a student out of a window for misbehaving. Hopefully the rest of this school doesn't learn their classroom management skills from action movies.

Board considers texting ban for school bus drivers

Story: Board considers texting ban for school bus drivers

Miami schools are "considering" banning bus drivers from texting. Considering! What the F do school bus drivers need to text message for?! When you're behind the wheel and your cargo is 40 school children, texting should be the LAST thing you're allowed to do. Hey Miami- way to be proactive with these ground-breaking decisions.

School Bans Hooded Sweatshirts To Corral Cell Phone Use

Story: School Bans Hooded Sweatshirts To Corral Cell Phone Use

Hooded sweatshirts are allowing students to stay warm, comfortable, and text on their cell phones inside the pockets. I hope the school realizes that even after banning hoodies, kids will be ready with a new technique to access their phones. One teen points out that students don't even need to look at their phones because they all memorize the keyboard. As impressive that may sound to most adults, that skill directly reflects the technological and digital mindset of our youth. It should be a wake-up call that we need to invite certain technologies into the classroom, rather than fear them. A silly hooded sweatshirt ban is only a quick fix to avoid the issue.

"Sexting" banned at public schools in Texas

Story: "Sexting" banned at public schools in U.S. state of Texas

Good luck enforcing this one! I wonder if it makes more sense to ban "cell phone use," rather than specific actions on cell phones. It's already illegal for anyone to possess kid porn, and anytime a teenager (under 18) sends sexy images of themselves to friends, they are breaking the law. Maybe we should educate students on that fact, rather than trying to institute school rules about off-campus behaviors.

School District Explores Cell Phone Jamming

Story: School District Explores Cell Phone Jamming

No word yet if they have explored a back up plan for when terrorists cut off the land lines from working too. And just so this school knows, even if they jam cell phones, teens will have no problems finding another gadget to distract them from learning during class. Besides, I heard cell phone jammers give you cancer.

School-Shooting iPhone Game Removed From App Store

Story: School-Shooting iPhone Game Removed From App Store

Not too long after they removed a game in which the object was to shake a baby to death, Apple decided a game that encourages school shootings is the next to get the axe. I am sure when teachers ask their students what they did over the summer, they would love hearing that everyone downloaded a game with this kind of content. Something tells me the families of the Columbine victims aren't rushing to play this.

Teacher accused of sending teen lewd photos

Story: Teacher accused of sending teen lewd photos

You know it's a backwards world when 37-year olds can't even send nude pics to a teenage boys phone. I wonder if kids are even interested in finding Playboys anymore since the odds are that at least one person in every group of friends can have a teacher solicit them with sexy cell phone images.

Central NY teacher accused of taking pictures up women's skirts

Story: Central NY teacher accused of taking pictures up women's skirts

This guy is accused of snapping pics of female co-workers under the table during meetings. Let's review his excuses. Accusation One: Police found pictures of what looked like a women's lap and skirt. Excuse One: He wanted to catch her doing work, instead of paying attention during the meeting. Accusation Two: Police found pictures of women's legs and feet. Excuse Two: He wanted to show his wife the shoes she was wearing. So far this guy sounds like a real piece of work. I wonder if he actually even has a wife?

Bay Area girl suspended for videotaping unruly class

Story: Bay Area girl suspended for videotaping unruly class

If you tape it, they will watch. The young girl was fed up with the chaos in her classroom. Among other things, students were setting fires in trash cans. When she realized nothing was being done about it, she taped it and had the footage sent to the superintendent. And guess who got in trouble? While the school does have a policy about filming without permission, this is essentially like getting arrested for turning someone else in to the cops. The public education system has certainly made us proud!

Teen's Text Message Leads to Teacher's Arrest in Pot Case

Story: Teen's Text Message Leads to Teacher's Arrest in Pot Case

Please list any after school extra-curricular activities you are interested in leading. Does getting high with students count?
Mothers always have a hard time hearing that their 16-year old is experimenting with weed. That's generally when they demand that you can't hang around certain kids, because they will only get you into trouble. Kind of sucks for this mom that the bad influence happens to be a teacher at her childs school. Did he really think he was going to get away with this?

District bans file-sharing devices from its schools

Story: Dist. 204 bans file-sharing devices from its schools

MP3 players, cell phones, iPods...these gadgets are not going anywhere. Schools are blaming technology for a rise in bullying, and using it as its scapegoat for this district-wide ban. Let's consider this idea- Maybe school is becoming increasingly boring because it is not adapting to the needs of 21st century students, so children are left with no other choice but to allow text messaging to distract them in class. The resources ARE available to connect with this culture, it's just a matter of convincing stubborn administration to implement these tools.

Parents Say Cell Phone Video Shows Teacher Choking Student

Story: Parents Say Cell Phone Video Shows Teacher Choking Student

In the teachers defense, the boy allegedly threw a ruler at him first. If it goes to court, he plans to plead that two wrongs do in fact make a right. I am sure there are proper way to restrain unruly children, but if I were to wager a bet, I don't think that pinning them against a table and waiting until they cry 'mercy' is one of them. Please let me know if I am off the mark.

Mental disorder led teacher to send sexual messages to 14-year-old student

Maybe the real headline should read: "Woman with mental disorder allowed to teach!" You're telling me that this was the best applicant for the job? Well, you get what you paid for I guess. Too bad for the 14-year old boy though, because here's what he missed out on- "I want to rip all of your clothes off and have sex with you to the point of ecstasy." Wow! This teacher may have been the one that got away!

Elementary Student Suspended After Receiving Text From Mom

Story: Elementary Student Suspended After Receiving Text From Mom

Mom gets racy text message. Mom forwards text to 12-year old daughter. 12-year old sends it to everyone in the school. This really puts a whole new spin on how to manage the cell phones in school debate. I am sure principals like to know there are parents like this only making the problem worse.

Ohio school bans teacher-student texting

Story: Ohio school bans teacher-student texting

It's about time! The fact that these issues have to be addressed is troubling enough. There should not be a fine line between professionalism and non-professionalism. These are your students. You should not have to consider them when you are choosing monthly cell phone plans.

Teacher accused of sending sexual text to teen

You would think after hearding stories about teens getting arrested for "sexting" with each other, that it would deter an adult from getting caught for the same crime. I wonder if the person who developed the first cell phone ever imagined his invention would one day allow perverts to solicit teens with sexy text messages?

Coach Accused Of Taking Locker Room Photos

Story: Coach Accused Of Taking Locker Room Photos

He was given several directives to not bring his cell phone into the locker room, but the urge to take pictures of young boys showering proved to be just too irresistable.
