If you can't beat em', beat em' anyway!

Port Arthur ISD Principal Bessie Johnson (Travis Elementary) is accused of using corporal punishment to "motivate" a group of fifth graders to perform better on standardized tests. She allegedly had the students kneel in front of their individual test scores and walked along beating them down the line. Shades of the Old Deluder Satan Act in colonial Massachusetts (1657?)...children are born evil and we need to beat goodness into them...or at least better test scores. And this level of brilliance is still pervasive in 18 states in the USA that still allow corporal punishment in schools. Corporal punishment does not work, does not teach, and does not motivate. The state needs to strip this idiot of her certification and send her for alternative training...Jiffy Lube perhaps.

Math is hard...knocks!

Landstown math teacher Mike Shanklin was arrested by Virginia Beach police for allegedly belting a math student who failed to finish an assignment. Talk about high stakes testing!! The female student apparently stayed after school for some extra tutoring help when Mr. S cut loose with the fury of  No Child Left’s Behind.  With all of the negative publicity about US schools falling so far behind foreign competition in math and science test performance (TIMMS for example), rather than actually invest a higher % of our GDP in public education ( we rank near the bottom in this), we leave it up to individual teachers to come up with creative ways to solve the problem. Mr. Shanklin’s efforts were failed patriotism but patriotism nevertheless!
USA, USA, USA!!!

BREAKING: New Mexico Outlaws Corporal Punishment in Schools!

Heart Magazine magazine named New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez  “Woman of the Year” for her dedication to children’s advocacy and her efforts to keep children safe – and today she lived up to her reputation as she signed into law HB 172  - a law prohibiting corporal punishment as a disciplinary sanction in public schools.

Earlier this month Martinez signed an Anti-Bullying Bill into law and HB172 will further increase protections for New Mexico school children.

We spoke with renown Author and Educator Rosalind Wiseman, who recently hosted a bullying discussion from the White House, who had this to say:
“Any school that condones or doesn't explicitly condemn corporal punishment as a disciplinary strategy will have no credibility to talk to its students about bullying. Simply, if the students know the adults in the school can hit, slap them or worse, it sends the message that physical domination is how you address conflict. I honestly, can't think of a worse policy to alienate our children. ”
New Mexico is now the 31st state to outlaw corporal punishment in public schools. The United States is one of the only developed countries in the world that allows Corporal Punishment in schools - with 107 countries having national bans in place.

URGENT! Call RIGHT NOW to end Corporal Punishment in NM!

Governor Susan Martinez will be on New Mexicos biggest talk radio show today at 11am eastern, 15 minutes from now. There is a Corporal Punishment Ban that passed the house and senate that is just waiting for her to sign... Please call-in and ask her to sign the CP BAN into law! North Carolina School District Bans Corporal Punishment

Rockingham County North Carolina joins 69 other NC districts in banning corporal punishment, the infliction of pain -- usually by paddling or whipping. North Carolina is one of the only places in the developed world that still allows Corporal Punishment in schools. The United States stands alone in industrialized countries that allow CP and NC is one of only 20 US States that allows Corporal Punishment. Every year over 250,000 students are hit at least once by educators in US public schools.

DetentionSlip.org commends Rockingham County for joining us here in the future.

No wrongdoing in coach's alleged student whippings, officials say

Remember the Jackson Mississippi coach who was busted for whipping players on the basketball team for missing free throws? The school district is asking that the federal lawsuit be dropped, and claims there has been no wrongdoing in the case.

That there is even any discussion over whether it would ever be ok to hit students is remarkable and shows just how far folks in this district and state have to come. Yes, if you are from Mississippi, you are allowing students to be beaten in your state.

So, your job is to educate the students.. and you fail at your job, so you resort to hitting the students.. WHAT??!!

The United States is the ONLY Industrialized country in the WORLD to ALLOW Corporal Punishment in School.

SHOCK: Students forced to Beat each other in Texas 2nd Grade Classroom

Dear Texas,

Can you please join the rest of the developed world and adopt a ban on Corporal Punishment in your schools?

Thanks,
The Rest of the World

P.S. In case you didn't hear - one of your 2nd grade teachers thought it would be a good idea to let the kids beat each other as a form of corporal punishment. Of course, if should be pointed out, the federal government allows this sort of thing, as we are the only country in the developed world to lack a ban on corporal punishment.

National Boycott Planned for Memphis,TN if Corporal Punishment Reinstated in Schools

The Memphis, TN school board is entertaining the idea of bringing back corporal punishment after a district wide ban for the past 5 years.

DetentionSlip.org is leading an effort with the support of parents, teachers, activists, musicians, and other celebs who are vowing to boycott the city best known for blues and Elvis if corporal punishment is reinstated.

Corporal Punishment is the archaic practice of hitting kids with boards or leather straps. It is currently banned in 107 countries, 30 US States + DC, and has been exhaustively proven to be ineffective. It's widely recognized by the international community as a human rights violation and has strong opposition from groups like the NAACP, PTA, and hundreds of other organizations.

NY Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy is about to introduce legislation that would ban corporal punishment on a national level.

You can sign the petition to end corporal punishment in US schools here:

US House Hearings on Corporal Punishment in Schools

This past week, The Committee on Education and Labor held a hearing on Corporal Punishment in US Schools. This is ground breaking progress as it the first time in 18 years the government has discussed this issue.

Experts testified about the ineffectiveness of corporal punishment and the deleterious effects it can have on students. Both Democrats and Republicans agreed this needs to end, and the committee has promised to introduce a bill that would institute a federal ban on corporal punishment in US schools.

95 of the countries 100 largest school districts outlaw the practice. Even in Texas, which beats over 40,000 kids a year, the largest districts of Houston and Austin have banned the practice.

DetentionSlip.org, along with The United Nations, PTA and other organizations opposes corporal punishment in schools. We have set up a Facebook Page which we encourage you to "Like" and help spread the word - raising awareness around this issue will be crucial in the weeks to come.

VIDEO: Teacher orders kids to assault classmate

Story: Teacher accused of instructing kids to kick fellow student

A teacher is on paid leave after allegedly ordering her class to kick a fellow student. 8th graders who were present at the beat down are reporting they were told the line up and take turns kicking another student as a punishment. One girl reported that she just pretended to kick him, and noticed that his legs were bruised and that he was crying.

While this teacher is on leave, it's important to point out that corporal punishment is still legal in Texas, along with 20 other states. Where do we draw the line?

Teacher suspended without pay for spanking student

Story: Teacher suspended without pay for spanking student

Corporal punishment is still very legal in Alabama. However, the parents can request that their child not be spanked at school. This teacher decided to throw the rule book right out the window and start swinging. I guess some people still believe that "a paddle a day keeps the doctor away."

OUTRAGE: Mom upset with corporal punishment at son’s New Mexico school

Story: Mom upset with corporal punishment at son’s New Mexico school

Among a long list of problems with allowing paddling in schools, is that the whacking comes at the discretion of the staff. In this case, a 90-pound boy was sent home with a black and blue ass because "...if he was tough enough to talk back to the teachers, then he was tough enough to take the swats." During an investigation, it was learned that the paddle used has students names etched in it! Now, does this sound like the responsible discipline of a principal, or someone who proudly displays his acts of violence much like a trophy case?

Why waste the time and money of sending teachers to training workshops when all of your discipline tricks can be bought at Home Depot?

Birmingham Student Beaten In Class by Teacher

Story: Birmingham Student Says Beaten In Class

Although I haven't done the research, I have to believe that whipping a 9-year old with a belt for giving the wrong answers on a test isn't the most effective teaching practice. I guess some school employees would rather send students home with a bruise instead of an education.

Parent complains that school went too far with paddling

Story: Parent: School went too far with paddling

We find it necessary to keep reminding readers that some states still allow educators to beat students up with paddles. This boy boy got a few licks for disturbing his class. His mom, (using simple logic) argues that, "...if I put bruises on him, I would be in trouble." Actually mom, I think if anyone else in the country put bruises on him, they would be in trouble too. That's why we have laws against assault and battery. But for some odd reason, we still have schools that get away with giving kids "licks" with a paddle. Go figure.

Teacher Accused of Using a Jump Rope to Tie Up Misbehaving Students

Story: Hickory Substitute Teacher Accused of Using a Jump Rope to Tie Up Misbehaving Student

What is troubling about this story, is that while bound, the teacher told the children, "This is what it’s going to be like when you’re in jail." The nerve of this lady to give out such inaccurate information to our youth! Even though jails are over-crowded, I don't think it's ever been common practice to tie up prisoners with a jump rope when they are causing trouble in the yard. Either they get shanked by another inmate or they're put in solitary confinement. No wonder kids haven't been scoring well on tests!
