Below zero in Georgia!

No more zero scores on assignments and tests for 3rd through 8th graders in this school district in Georgia.
All students must earn at least a 60% on assignments and tests or be given the opportunity to redo/retake until a passing grade is earned. Supporters say it "forces teachers to coach students until they achieve mastery."
When is 60% mastery? And should teachers be "forced" on this? This serves as another prime example of trying to structure schools to promote compulsory learning when they are still designed under an antiquated model of compulsory attendance. This old car can't run the 21st century race. Hard as the education mechanics try, the Model T design of American schools can't compete with the Indy car needed to really promote achievement for all children.

Wooly Bully

Ex-superintendent of two Georgia School Districts (Cobb and Fulton Counties) has drawn fire and ire for allegedly threatening a state official investigating wide-spread cheating on state exams. James Wilson railed against the inquiry, telling Kathleen Mathers she would "pay dearly" for her use of "Gestapo tactics." The poor Gestapos can't get a break! Here we have the best of high stakes testing...cheating, coercion, bullying are but the tip of the "testberg." Underlying our blind faith in standardized test results are the loss of...recess, Physical Education, Art/Music, innovation and creativity. Imagine if all students across the nation sat for these exams and just filled them out randomly as a form of protest...every school would fail to make AYP... then what?

If four math teachers have a combined IQ of 300...

Greetings again from the deep south! A suburban Atlanta teacher has regrettably resigned after assigning math homework to 3rd graders that included word problems about slavery and beatings. While I am not astonished about this coming from Georgia, I am shocked that the teachers can actually cipher word problems! Four teachers from Beaver Ridge Elementary School assigned said homework, only one has resigned.  Imagine the teacher planning meetings that arrived at this lesson plan. Talk about collaborative brilliance. Apparently they spent several days pondering not only this gem of an assignment, but also how to arrive at the correct mathematical solution! Does this really require teacher certification?

Henry principal faces backlash over T.I. visit

This is great.. so as part of rapper T.I.'s sentence, he has to do 400 hours of community service including speaking at schools. One parent was upset that a convicted felon was being brought in to speak to his kid, and told the prinicpal. The principal, Terry Oatts, responded to the parent:

I thought about asking a guy who snorted cocaine and got arrested for DUI when he was 30 to come and speak to our kids, but President George W. Bush was not available.
Zing!

17 year old girls are being paddled for having prom dressed that are too short. Am I the only one who sees the perversion here?

Classroom striptease? NOT GUILTY!

Some students were preforming a strip tease for their class; the teacher was taken to court; not guilty.
The argument was that he didn't try to stop it or prevent it, and he argued that he wasn't aware of what was going on. Thoughts?

We can only hope that much like a Shakespeare classic, that the teacher was poisoned out of love...twice.

Parenting Tip of the Day: If you're struggling for ideas to ensure that your child grows up to be a serial killer or rapist, have him violently beat his pet hamster to death with a hammer. (Sent in by Lynn Geter, currently serving time in the Meriwether County Jail, Georgia)

Parent complains that school went too far with paddling

Story: Parent: School went too far with paddling

We find it necessary to keep reminding readers that some states still allow educators to beat students up with paddles. This boy boy got a few licks for disturbing his class. His mom, (using simple logic) argues that, "...if I put bruises on him, I would be in trouble." Actually mom, I think if anyone else in the country put bruises on him, they would be in trouble too. That's why we have laws against assault and battery. But for some odd reason, we still have schools that get away with giving kids "licks" with a paddle. Go figure.

1,500 students disciplined for not wearing uniforms

Story: 1,500 students disciplined for not wearing uniforms

Pop Quiz: Which causes more of a disruption to the learning process? Students not strictly following a dress code, or the entire student body organizing protests against a dress code they feel is absurd? Even many of the parents are opposed to the uniforms. Some argue that it's hard to afford BOTH school clothes and regular clothes. We'll see how long these students can keep this up!

Clayton teacher charged with putting "hit" on student

Story: Clayton teacher charged with putting "hit" on student

It's common knowledge that if you don't like having a student in your class, or don't agree with him being gay, that easiest way to resolve this predicament is by hiring someone to kill him. Sometimes when you've seen the Godfather movies a few too many times, it becomes challenging to grasp reality again.

Teachers Fight Over Man In Front Of Students

Story: Teachers Fight Over Man In Front Of Students

High school love triangles are always so interesting to watch unfold. This time, the students had front row seats as two of their female teachers duked it out over a male teacher they both liked. The tragic ending of this story occurs when children learn that it is acceptable to settle disputes with violent public reactions. Gotta love paid, professional role models!

Georgia High School Bans Religious Banners at Football Games

Story: Georgia High School Bars Religious Banners at Football Games

The players have a tradition of crashing through a big banner with slogans from the Bible such as "In God I have put my trust. I shall not be afraid." After realizing that this is not a private Catholic school, a parent suggested ditching the idea because it endorses religion. We are still waiting to hear if the school plans to continue accepting dollar bills that say "In God we trust."

Naked man hijacks bus carrying students

Story: Naked man hijacks bus carrying students

I know they call it "Hot-lanta" but seriously dude -- put some clothes on before you try to hijack the school bus. Especially in the summer -- if school bus seats are anything like the hot vinyl frying pans they used to be when I was in school, they aren't the sort of place you want to be sitting bare-assed.

Gun discharges in bookbag at Macon middle school

It sounds like the student was practicing proper firearm safety by not aiming the gun at any people. It just stinks that he most likely ruined a brand new backpack during a time of economic crunch. His mom should teach him a lesson by making him use the bullet-hole riddled one the rest of the school year.

Miss Georgia gives up title to teach

Story: New Miss Ga. bows out, Miss Cobb gets crown

She gave up a new car, a pageant wardrobe, and $15,000 to teach middle school instead. It's not every day that a teacher puts the kids first, so Miss Higgins should be recognized for this sacrifice. Don't worry, she's probably still the hottest teacher in school though.

Story: School chief, aide arrested in cheating probe

The principal did exactly what you are thinking. She erased students answers on a state test and changed them to the correct ones. I wonder how long this little scam has been going on? Now I understand the rationale behind her proposal to nickname her school "The Best School Ever."

Segregated Prom (Dance Remix)

Music video just done up mixing elements from the story about the Segregated Prom in Georgia. Watch, forward, spread the word.

DetentionSlip.org covered this story earlier this week:
Segregated Proms En Vogue in Racist Georgia High Schools

The NY Times covered it as well:
A Prom Divided

Sound track was done up by DJ Whoquestion, a high school student who actually first tipped us off about this story earlier this week. Video was put together by TheTruth (which explains any typos).

Segregated Proms En Vogue in Racist Georgia High Schools

THE DSLIP LAWYERS SAY "LET HER RIP"
THE CONTROVERSIAL PHOTO IS BACK!!!

Story: In Georgia, Segregation Endures on Prom Night - NYTimes.com

I'm not sure what's more troubling, the fact that THERE ARE STILL TWO F^&$ING SEPARATE PROMS for Black / White kids (what if you are mixed race, asian, latino?) or the CAVE MAN IGNORANCE of the white folks they interviewed.

The trick bitch on the right (the mom) said:

"This community and this school system is fine like it is. This is the way they have done it ever since the school system opened and they have started having proms. So it has worked for them this way. Why change something that has worked? It isn't broken. The kids are fine with it. Everyyear when it comes time to start planning for prom, you have the white kids who start planning for their prom, and the black kids who start planning for their prom."

The trick bitch on training wheels (Harley Boone, the daughter in the middle) said

"..we don't have a school sponsored prom, we have a private prom. It's always been segregated. There's always been 2 separate proms. It don't[sic] seem like a big deal around here, it's just what we know and what our parents have done for so many years. In our school system it's not really about being racist or having all white friends or all black friends. We all hangout together, we're all in the same classes, we all eat lunch together at the same table. It's not about what color you are, it's about your attitude and how you present yourself, and how you take care of yourself, it's not about if you're black or if you're white."
Ummmmmmm... Whaaaa? How the f&%* is this girl graduating high school -- it actually IS about whether you're white or black (thus the entire segragated prom thing).. And "it's all about how you present yourself", you mean like that bootleg Louis Vutton knockoff bag you're rocking? Or how about presenting yourself in a national news outlet as a racist twit. Oh, we get it now!

Of course, the black students interviewed weren't as enthusiastic.

Read the article and accompanying slide show here.

Oh, and Harley Boone is on Facebook, friend her while I go vomit.
