North Carolina School District Bans Corporal Punishment

Rockingham County North Carolina joins 69 other NC districts in banning corporal punishment, the infliction of pain -- usually by paddling or whipping. North Carolina is one of the only places in the developed world that still allows Corporal Punishment in schools. The United States stands alone in industrialized countries that allow CP and NC is one of only 20 US States that allows Corporal Punishment. Every year over 250,000 students are hit at least once by educators in US public schools.

DetentionSlip.org commends Rockingham County for joining us here in the future.

Roadway Misspelling: "SHCOOL"

"School" does not equal "Shcool." A roadside crew misspelled the word "school" as if they've never been. Time for a course refresher or two... especially since they misspelled the school's name, Guilford on a detour sign two weeks earlier!

Teacher suspended over Facebook comments

Story: Apex teacher suspended after parents question Facebook comments

After a classroom conversation about evolution, a child thought it would be a nice gesture to give his teacher a Bible. Rather than handle the situation like a mature adult, she decided to open up a Facebook rant and referred to the incident as a hate crime. Her friends chimed in with replies about "ignorant Southern rednecks" and swastikas. I guess some teacher aren't familiar with the concept of behind closed doors.

School secretary fired for speaking Spanish

Story: Ex-CMS secretary says she was fired after she kept speaking Spanish to Latino parents

When she took over the school, the new renegade principal couldn't wait to tighten up the borders and ban employees from speaking Spanish at a school that is 42% Hispanic. No word yet if this school tossed out the civil rights lessons from curriculum.

Charlotte teacher suspended after fight with student

Story: Charlotte teacher suspended after fight with student

I always thought after-school fights are between students. But I guess when you really have a bone to pick, what better place and time?

Teacher Accused of Using a Jump Rope to Tie Up Misbehaving Students

Story: Hickory Substitute Teacher Accused of Using a Jump Rope to Tie Up Misbehaving Student

What is troubling about this story, is that while bound, the teacher told the children, "This is what it’s going to be like when you’re in jail." The nerve of this lady to give out such inaccurate information to our youth! Even though jails are over-crowded, I don't think it's ever been common practice to tie up prisoners with a jump rope when they are causing trouble in the yard. Either they get shanked by another inmate or they're put in solitary confinement. No wonder kids haven't been scoring well on tests!

Students Suspended for Bringing Fast Food for Lunch

Story: Students Suspended for Bringing Fast Food for Lunch

Parents have been caught smuggling hamburgers from McDonald's and Wendy's inside the brown lunch bags of their children. According to the school, this type of contraband is strictly prohibited. Students found with the illegal fast food have been suspended. The warden is considering random locker shake-downs if this problem persists.

166 middle-schoolers suspended for dress code violations

Story: 166 middle-schoolers suspended for dress code violations

Everyone knows that one of biggest problems facing our education system has been shirts not being tucked in. When the day comes that all of our students look neat and proper, teachers will again be able to concentrate during instructional time.

District nixes cash-for-grades fundraiser

Story: District nixes cash-for-grades fundraiser

The principal approved an idea that allowed students to pay for better grades. This is not a made up story. To off-set budget problems (and presumably poor grades), students could buy extra points on their tests. $20 can increase your score by 20 points! It was also learned that the district scratched "Morals and Ethics" from their lesson plans and replaced it with "The Art of Bribery." After hearing this story, I can only hope that our schools have finally reached rock bottom.

School system plans random background checks on employees

Story: School system plans random background checks on employees

Even though a better idea might be to give proper background checks before you hire school employees, it must be cheaper to wait until they actually get caught for committing crimes like sexual misconduct. I guess it's easy to lie on your application and cover up old felony charges. But I suppose "random" checks will help weed out all the bad guys.

School nurse accused of stealing student's pills

Story: School nurse accused of stealing student's pills

Do you want the red one, or the blue one? Both! You know you're a pill junkie when you find yourself stealing meds from a handicapped student. But I'm sure the vitamins she replaced them with are just as effective.

North Rowan HS Teacher Charged With Having Sex With Students

Guns, Knives, and Fists: Rising trend in school?

About 6 months ago we did a report about school safety. After reading these recent headlines, we're starting to wonder if we should have bitten our tongue. Are teens becoming more violent in school? Or do they just not fear consequences? Check out these stories and decide:

'Education' misspelled on CMS teacher coaster

I hope North Carolina isn't putting their best foot forward in this one. They distributed 1800 coasters as a teacher gift and misspelled the one word we hope they get right- Education. Is there anyone who wants to argue that Microsoft Word spellcheck hasn't dumbed us all down a bit?

Gym teacher accused of assaulting student

Story: Gym teacher accused of assaulting student

Growing up, one of the best ways to prove physical dominance was to pelt smaller, slower kids with dodgeballs in gym class. At the age of 36, you would hope most people out-grow this phase. Unfortunately, one teacher still feels the need to demonstrate his anger through accuracy (over and over again). The target? A 14-year old girl. The result? A job opening in Lincoln County, NC.

Teacher accused of choking student

Story: Teacher accused of choking student

Deputies Arrest Sex Offender Who Took Pictures At School

Story: Sheriff's Deputies Arrest Sex Offender Who Took Pictures At School

What a clever scheme for a sex offender! Get a job as a newspaper reporter and land a story in a middle school so you can snap pictures of little boys. And he would have got away with it too but some teacher became suspicious when he was spotted with a chubby in his pants.

Teacher suspended for dragging student

Story: Teacher suspended for dragging student

I just got done speaking with a woodsman, and he claimed that after he hunts and kills a deer, he also resorts to this technique. Now why a first grade teacher would need to do this is beyond his imagination. I wonder if she had to hog-tie the girl in the hallway too?

Teacher's Husband Accused Of Stealing From School

The teacher was a music instructor, and her husband has somehow acquired over $55,000 worth of instruments. He wasn't caught until he was seen around town with his own personal marching band.

School mispells spelling bee champs name

Story: No spellcheck on school sign

It apparantly doesn't take an eighth grade education to land the job as marquee manager. In what we all hoped (but were sadly let down) was meant to be ironic, the boy was congratulated by seeing a mispelling of the most common name in the English language- Michael. Not to discredit the competition, but Michael happened to be the only one who noticed the error.
