Meaner than a junkyard dog

Looks like the old bait and switch to us! Minnesota-based Junkyard Prophet, a Christian youth ministry promised an anti-bullying and anti-drug message at the assembly in Dunkerton, Iowa. Instead, the kids got lectured on the evils of homosexuality and pre-marital sex. The group told the high school students that "anyone who is gay will die before they reach age 42." The students are pissed and the superintendent promised that this will never happen again. We hope these Christian prophets did not get paid for the shameless performance and that they will actually deliver on what a youth ministry should promise...lots of religious bullshit! Oh wait, they did deliver!

School claims Jesus was a vampire

Story: District parents angry over radical Web link

Usually on a school website you can find information such as a district calendar, some educational resources, and the occaisional link to a radical website supporting the claim that Jesus was a vampire. Regardless of your religious affiliation, you can see why some parents might be upset that they are teaching children that there is a blurry line between the Blood of Christ and a character from Twilight.

Teacher suspended over Facebook comments

Story: Apex teacher suspended after parents question Facebook comments

After a classroom conversation about evolution, a child thought it would be a nice gesture to give his teacher a Bible. Rather than handle the situation like a mature adult, she decided to open up a Facebook rant and referred to the incident as a hate crime. Her friends chimed in with replies about "ignorant Southern rednecks" and swastikas. I guess some teacher aren't familiar with the concept of behind closed doors.

Kalamazoo Catholic schoolchildren write letters to Baby Jesus instead of Santa

Story: Kalamazoo Catholic schoolchildren write letters to Baby Jesus instead of Santa

This year for Christmas, the child of Christ will be receiving notes from children instead of Santa Claus. These kids are going to be in for a heartbreaker when they realize that neither Santa or baby Jesus exist! Furthermore, even if baby Jesus received letters from a classroom of children...infants can't read! No wonder our kids aren't doing well in school.

Las Vegas teacher disciplined for denying Holocaust

Story: Las Vegas teacher disciplined for denying Holocaust

According to the teacher, "photographs were doctored, text books are innaccurate, and the Nazi's lacked the technology to kill so many people." I suppose there was just a genetic defect that led to the deaths of over 6 million Jews? The teacher is also under investigation for denying that we landed on the moon, claiming that JFK is still alive, and trying to convince students that the Earth is flat.

Taunton second-grader suspended over drawing of Jesus

Story: Taunton second-grader suspended over drawing of Jesus

Whether or not you believe in the story of Jesus, it is widely accepted that he died while crucified on a cross. The image isn't a warped interpretation of death from a violent 8-year old. The school administration disagrees. After seeing the above drawing, the boy was sent home and recommended for a psychological evaluation. I don't even think Jesus himself was so quick to call someone a 'sinner!'

Student assaulted during 'Kick A Jew Day'

Story: Student assaulted during 'Kick A Jew Day'

Hallmark employees must be driving themselves crazy trying to keep up with all these holidays. You would think Thanksgiving and Christmas would be a busy enough time of the year, but with the recent additions of "Kick a Ginger Day" and "Kick a Jew Day," who has time to rest?! I wonder when we will read about "Kick a Middle-Class White Student Day?"

Chelmsford school bans holiday items at gift shop

Story: Chelmsford school bans holiday items at gift shop

Anything that has any resemblance to either Christmas or religion was scratched off the inventory list at this elementary school. This includes Santa, candy canes, stockings, basically anything green or red. We've already accepted that we can't call it "Christmas" in schools anymore, but now we're stripping away all holiday spirit? At this pace, I give it about ten years until children don't even get this day off from school.

Polk County teacher suing state over fingerprinting

Story: Polk County teacher suing state over fingerprinting

As part of a background check, teachers are required to get their fingerprints screened. This woman is claiming that (according to the book of Revelation in the Bible), letting the state fingerprint her would "bear her the mark of the beast and she would be tormented in burning sulfur." Well that certainly seems like a reasonable argument in today's day and age. It makes me wonder if Texas has been covering up all their sulfur-fire deaths over the years. Maybe this is why it's hard to find good teachers?

Georgia High School Bans Religious Banners at Football Games

Story: Georgia High School Bars Religious Banners at Football Games

The players have a tradition of crashing through a big banner with slogans from the Bible such as "In God I have put my trust. I shall not be afraid." After realizing that this is not a private Catholic school, a parent suggested ditching the idea because it endorses religion. We are still waiting to hear if the school plans to continue accepting dollar bills that say "In God we trust."

Student Upset Over Graphic 9/11 Film

Story: Student Upset Over Graphic 9/11 Film

How else are teens going to learn about different cultures without being forced to watch an actual beheading on video? The teacher showed the anti-Islam film, Fitna, and began desensitizing her students to extreme graphic violence. It's one thing to talk about death, but maybe we should reconsider having viewing parties in high school classrooms. I can only imagine how they teach sex Ed!

5 teens attack, injure Muslim girl on school bus in Ann Arbor

Story: 5 teens attack, injure Muslim girl on school bus in Ann Arbor

I am assuming the 16-year old girl was posing some sort of a threat to the five students who beat her, dragged her, and ripped off her scarf. Why else would they feel compelled to act like this? I guess high school students don't have a clear understanding about what it means to be convicted of a hate crime. That's probably because it's not on the standardized tests.

Kentucky school trip included baptisms

STORY: Kentucky school trip included baptisms

A Kentucky Football coach rounded up the players and took 'em to church where something like 10 of them ended up being baptized. Nothing screams separation of church and state like bringing the boys out to be indoctorinated into a 1st century salvation cult.

Idaho school sues state over Bible plan

Here we go again with another Battle of the Bible. This school actually claims that it planned to use the book as a teaching resource, and not a religious text. To be fair, I hope they had plans to teach the Qur'an as well.

Flap over flag, hijab leads to suspension of Hernando student

A Muslim student did not stand up for the Pledge of Allegiance. A classmate of her decided to confront her in the hallway and demand she take her hijab off. She went on to explain that she plans to enlist in the Army so she can go to Iraq and fight against other enemies that look like her. The parents of the 16-year old feel that this hateful, racist, and threatening harassment falls well within her freedom of speech. Just when you think we're making progress after 9/11, you hear a story like this that sets us back another ten years.

Fla. students sent home over for anti-Islam shirts

Several students were sent home from school in Gainesville for wearing shirts comparing Islam to the Devil. A pastor at a nearby church was handing them out to his followers. He claims, "spreading the church's message is more important than education." Well, I can see he certainly isn't spreading a message of peace and love. But it makes for a good toss up question- Which is more boring- church or school?

Church and State: Schools Divided

Story 1: Texas public schools required to teach Bible this year

VERSUS

Here's a chance to examine the spectrum we are facing with religion in schools. In one corner, Texas schools will be teaching the Bible just like they teach The Great Gatsby or Hamlet. And in Florida, a couple of educators not only have their careers at risk, but could face jail time for praying before a meal at a school event. Last I checked, our country is loaded with churches that are more than willing to teach the word of the Lord free of cost. And I can't think of many job/college applications that require a background in the Old Testament. So regardless of any freedom of speech arguments, it really seems like there is no practical reason to invite religion into a classoom.

Oregon wants to ban teachers from wearing hijabs in public schools

Basically, it sounds like they don't want Muslims teaching. I wonder if Jewish men can wear kippahs or Catholics can wear a cross anywhere?

Teacher accused of displaying Bible sues district

This the same guy who was accused of burning a cross on a students arm. Now he is suing for $1 million dollars because he feels he has been harassed and his rights have been violated. A million dollars oughta make up for not being allowed to preach the Bible during a science class, right? Well Mr. Freshwater, I am sure you are familiar with this little passage from Proverbs 28:20- "A faithful man is rich with blessings; but one who is eager to be rich will not go unpunished. " Good luck with the lawsuit.

Xavier students rally around ousted high school teacher

Ask yourself if you've ever spent the night with a girl before. If the answer is yes, then you better thank god (well not the Catholic god), that you still have your job. This teacher had a couple drinks and crashed with his girlfriend. According to his school and religion, that is a big "no-no." In other words, they would have much rather seen him drive home drunk.
