Taking the daily grind out of public schools

No more pencils no more books, no more teacher’s dirty dancing looks!!! Valley High is stepping up to enforce a grinding policy that is long overdue. In response to parent concerns, students will have to sign a pledge to stop grinding at school dances. They even seem to have clearly defined grinding: “usually involves a boy facing a girl’s backside and their bodies rubbing together“. Whew…that leaves open the front to front rubbing of my generation and it seems that the GLBT students are off the hook as well. I love it when schools try to limit student expression. I recommend a strict dress code for the dance…perhaps jocks and cups for all students and an appropriate selection of songs that will not elicit erections…square dancing anyone?

Teacher Fired Over "Have You Drugged Your Kid Today?" Bumper Sticker

An English teacher was fired after refusing to remove a bumper sticker for her car that read "Have You Drugged Your Kid Today?"

She says it was political commentary on the over medication of students and she never discussed it in class, but some parents complained which led to her being asked to remove it.

She clearly has a right to political expression, and it would be hard to argue the bumper sticker is obscene. The only real question is can the school regulate what is on her car while it is on school property.

What do you think?

Graphic speech about oral and anal sex upsets school parents

Story: Sex talk at middle school upsets parents, students

When a motivational speaker opens the assembly by asking the principal to leave the room and requesting that the students don't tell their parents what they hear, you know you're in for a treat. And now we're left with a middle school full of confused children who have graphic descriptions of how to give and receive oral sex on their mind. Maybe in the future it would be a wise idea to screen 'sex talk' guests rather than invite any horny board member who volunteers?

Student suspended for ‘threatening’ rap lyrics

Story: BLHS student suspended for ‘threatening’ rap lyrics

This is a prime example of what's wrong with Zero Tolerance. I am guessing this boy isn't the only teenager in the country to try and write a rap song...fairly confident about that. But since his lyrics indirectly contained references to guns and death, he now faces suspension, potential expulsion, and charges at a juvenile court. Imagine if Run DMC had it this rough?

Student punished for making funny face in school photo

Story: Student punished for making funny face in school photo

Major problems facing Texas public schools:

1. Drop out rates
2. Gang activity
3. Not smiling properly for yearbook pictures

8th-grader suspended for wild Bengals haircut

Story: 8th-grader suspended for wild Bengals haircut

Usually when a local pro sports team is playing well, everyone supports their success. That's what this boy was doing when he decided to shave a 'B' for Bengals into his hair. But without fail, the principal deemed this to be "extreme" and "distracting," and now he can't come to school. We can only assume the principal is a Steelers fan.

150 suspended over dress code at Indiana school

Story: Mass suspensions over dress code at Ind. school

This principal means business. Anything too tight, too baggy, too revealing, or with logos and designs is strictly prohibited from school grounds. We understand that students may have broken the rules, but the real question has more to do with the intent behind the policy. The more effort schools put on battling dress code problems, the less time the have to focus on real issues...say, grades, attendance and graduation rates for example.

Boy Banned From School For Moustache

Story: Boy Banned From School For Moustache

Everyone knows that moustaches lead teen boys down a destructive path of drugs and violence.

Haircut sparks controversy at Staten Island middle school

Story: Haircut sparks controversy at Staten Island middle school

Most schools at least cover their butts by defining ridiculous hair style policies in their handbooks. This school has no such rule, but the boy with a "half-hair cut" was still sent home. It turns out the principal just gets really weird about symmetry, and it was driving him nuts to see this off-balanced boy in the hallways.

Student Suspended for Dressing Like Girl

The teen had intentions on informing his classmates about gay and transgender rights. The principal felt otherwise and seemed to want nothing to do with boys dressing like sissies. One day, schools will be tolerant of this concept and won't make a students' sexual preference or orientation be reason to feel outcast.

Gay-themed film cost Oklahoma teacher her job

Story: Gay-themed film cost Oklahoma teacher her job

The teacher began doing projects based on the film The Laramie Project. The movie addresses issues of homophobia and allowed the students to engage in productive discussion about homosexuality. When the superintendent heard rumors that teens were opening their minds and learning to become tolerant, he had seen enough. After a small dramatic parking lot performance, the teacher was fired and the students returned to judging others based on sexual orientation.

Student can't dance with Obama mask in show

A fifth grade student wants to do his own version of a Saturday Night Live skit featuring Barack Obama dancing for his school talent show. Some parents feel it is inappropriate and offensive. We are thinking hard to find out how this could possibly be controversial, except for maybe there are a lot of McCain supporters. The boy won't do the dance without the mask, because as he wisely put it, "If I don't have the mask," he said, "it's just some kid up there dancing around."

School ought to back off on pierced teen

Midway through the school year the administration decided to implement a policy that forbids multiple piercings. Though the honor student has never posed a threat to anyone, it is assumed that the principal just didn't like her look. The irony is that now it has become a big deal because it's shining a huge spotlight on an unjustified policy. Who would have thought that singling someone out has side effects?

5th grader kicked out of school for pink hair

Story: Sawyer student can't go to school because of hair

This is why Jem had to drop out of school to become a rock star. Note to administrators: The actual disruption a hair cut causes lasts only a couple of hours on the first day. When you create media stirs and kick kids out of schools because they dyed their hair, wouldn't you agree this causes much more of a distraction for the whole school? Oh well, one day we'll get it right.

Student suspended for bumper sticker

Story: Walla Walla student suspended for bumper sticker

The school went ahead and figured since the car was parked in their parking lot, that some of the language on her bumper sticker caused a disruption to the education process (which generally occurs in classrooms and hallways). Schools can go months and months with grafitti sprayed on their property, and do nothing about it, but the second they don't like the sticker a girl puts on her car- suspension.

Teacher faces lawsuit for cutting students hair

Story: Roanoke County school board on sharp end of student's haircut suit

I am pretty sure it's well within a teachers jurisdiction to decide what hair style young boys should have. In actuality, it's up to the mom to allow her child to look like a dirtbag or clean-cut. According the the report, the teacher also "pinned him against a locker and 'growled' at him about his hair." This sounds more like a scene from the movie Teen Wolf than a place to get an education. If the teacher ever has plans to open their own salon, please be advised that your guerrilla marketing plan comes across a bit too aggressive.

Piercings keep husband of student out of dances

Story: Piercings keep husband of student out of dances

Summary: Girl wants to take boyfriend (now husband) to school dance. Boy has a history (he was once a student) of being warned to remove piercing and change hair style. School says boy cannot attend dance unless his piercings are not present. Boy, who is no longer a student, still somehow has his basic rights oppressed by a public school. What a fun world we live in.

School district says no tattoos on teachers

Story: School district to require employees to cover tattoos

A unanimous vote decided that no teachers in the schools can have any part of a tattoo visible. It was made clear that tattoos "don't have a good stigma." Not sure what the latest stats are, but it's gotta be something like 75% of adults are getting tattoos. It's become so commonplace that I am not even sure kids notice anymore. Too bad for all the education majors in college who just went out and spent $100 for that killer skull and crossbones ink on their calf.

7th grader called racist for wearing Palin t-shirt

Story: 7th grader called racist for wearing Palin t-shirt

Maybe this is why so many other schools are banning election shirts altogether? I am sure, as a 12-year old, she is a die-hard Republican, but that is beside the point. The school again claims that this incident hasn't been reported, therefore they haven't stepped in to prevent it from reoccurring. I think the same thing happened in California years ago when students harassed a young boy for being anti-"human-cyborg-from-100-years-in-the-future" because he did not support Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Boy Suspended for Rayhawk (Rays Mohawk)

Story: Boy Suspended for Sporting Rayhawk

To fill everyone in: the Tampa Bay Rays are in the baseball playoffs right now. The players on the team have all cut Mohawks as a superstition for their recent victories. A 12-year old boy, as well as most every other Rays fan in town, all have similar hair cuts to support the team. The school principal (obviously a White Sox fan) decided the boy cannot be in school until the hair is changed. The boy figured it was either see his team lose, or find a school that allows the "Rayhawk." Like any true sports fan, the boy will no longer be attending his old school.
