In the beginning

A bill has been introduced in the Indiana State Senate that would allow teaching of creationism as an option in Indiana's public schools as part of the science curriculum. Education and schooling are not the same thing. Education comes from multiple sources (parents, friends, church, Snoop Dog, etc.) but public schooling should actually base science curriculum on....wait...science. For folks that don't really get what a theory is in science, it is not the same as personal theories, like, "I have a theory that the earth is at the center of the universe," or " the sun really does revolve around the earth...you see it rise and fall every day!"

Bibles for Porn in Texas! (VIDEO)

(Samson & the Prostitute - Judges 16:1 "and he went into her")
The student organization Atheist Agenda has staged a publicity stunt in which they are allowing students to trade in "smut for smut". They have a table set up in a heavily trafficked area where they will trade you a porno for any holy text. The group points out that the content of these holy works contains graphic depictions of sex that are no different than what you find on YouPorn.

Some students are outraged, others love it. The administration has made the right play here, by publicly acknowledging that the students are protected under the first amendment.

N.Y. School District Agrees to Pay Student $1 for Refusing to Allow Bible Club

Story: N.Y. School District Agrees to Pay Student $1 for Refusing to Allow Bible Club

Back in March a student was denied the right to start a Bible club at his school. Long story short, he took them to court, won, and received $1 in damages suffered. It great to know that we have a fully-functioning legal system to resolve pressing issues. No word yet how the boy plans to spend his winnings.

Georgia High School Bans Religious Banners at Football Games

Story: Georgia High School Bars Religious Banners at Football Games

The players have a tradition of crashing through a big banner with slogans from the Bible such as "In God I have put my trust. I shall not be afraid." After realizing that this is not a private Catholic school, a parent suggested ditching the idea because it endorses religion. We are still waiting to hear if the school plans to continue accepting dollar bills that say "In God we trust."

Idaho school sues state over Bible plan

Here we go again with another Battle of the Bible. This school actually claims that it planned to use the book as a teaching resource, and not a religious text. To be fair, I hope they had plans to teach the Qur'an as well.

Church and State: Schools Divided

Story 1: Texas public schools required to teach Bible this year

VERSUS

Here's a chance to examine the spectrum we are facing with religion in schools. In one corner, Texas schools will be teaching the Bible just like they teach The Great Gatsby or Hamlet. And in Florida, a couple of educators not only have their careers at risk, but could face jail time for praying before a meal at a school event. Last I checked, our country is loaded with churches that are more than willing to teach the word of the Lord free of cost. And I can't think of many job/college applications that require a background in the Old Testament. So regardless of any freedom of speech arguments, it really seems like there is no practical reason to invite religion into a classoom.

Teacher accused of displaying Bible sues district

This the same guy who was accused of burning a cross on a students arm. Now he is suing for $1 million dollars because he feels he has been harassed and his rights have been violated. A million dollars oughta make up for not being allowed to preach the Bible during a science class, right? Well Mr. Freshwater, I am sure you are familiar with this little passage from Proverbs 28:20- "A faithful man is rich with blessings; but one who is eager to be rich will not go unpunished. " Good luck with the lawsuit.

Xavier students rally around ousted high school teacher

Ask yourself if you've ever spent the night with a girl before. If the answer is yes, then you better thank god (well not the Catholic god), that you still have your job. This teacher had a couple drinks and crashed with his girlfriend. According to his school and religion, that is a big "no-no." In other words, they would have much rather seen him drive home drunk.

Even though Creationism IS nonsense, Judge says teacher can't say so.

Story: Judge: Teacher violated kids' rights by calling creationism 'nonsense'

The teacher calls bullshit on the bullshit, and is found guilty. That's some bullshit!

Can't teachers explain religion for what it is? Stories that were made up to help people recall the sun cycles for farming, plant crops, and have a fun way to explain the world pre-science?

You're allowed to teach Egyptian and Greek "myths" were just stories, but "god" forbid you explain how Christianity was based on the same concepts (For those not up on their history, the Egyptian God Osiris was also born of a virgin, had 12 disciples, was crucified, performed miracles, was resurrected after three days, etc. -- Osiris was hundreds of years before Christ -- along with countless other pre-christian deities -- these are just recycled ideas. See many more of them here)

I would argue that the current climate protects the religious myths unduely. Why do we favor preserving the myth of Christ over Zeus? Isn't that in violation of the equal protection clause?

To be fair this teacher was a little hostile -- he needn't be and can still get his point across, simply discuss the facts! He said a few things, the one worth quoting is: "when you put on your Jesus glasses, you can't see the truth."

Mother uses Bible verse on modesty to fight Irving ISD dress code requiring tucked-in shirts

According to the book of Timothy, young women are not permitted to tuck their shirts in at a public school. At least that is one mothers interpretation of the good book. You would think that school districts would consult the Bible before they institute dress code policies. The mom is also allegedly upset that the cafeteria doesn't offer the Blood of the Lamb on its lunch menu.

Elmbrook Schools Sued over Graduations at Elmbrook Church

Story: Elmbrook Schools Sued over Graduations at Elmbrook Church

For nine years, graduation has been at the same church. All of a sudden the church-state argument strikes home with some people. In a related note, some parents of unathletic students in nearby schools are protesting that their graduation be moved from local civic arenas.

Florida Parents Sue School Over Religious Song

Story: Florida Parents Sue Over School Song

Two parents weren't happy that a song mentioned "In God We Trust." It wasn't enough that the school removed the song from their program, but these parents feel they are entitled to damages pay because their kids were exposed to this. It was this same argument that got the Pledge of Allegiance in trouble years ago. If they win in court, they will be requesting that "In God We Trust" also be removed from the dollar bills they receive.

School sued for censoring religious message

Story: School sued for censoring religious message

The students organize a little prayer circle every morning by the flag pole. Recently, they've been hanging up flyers to recruit more followers. I'm pretty sure it's been close to a decade or more that we officially decided religion and schools don't mix, but some people still feel God belongs in the classroom. Well, maybe the Big Guy can help cover some of their lawyer fees while they fight this one.

N.J. Football Coach's Appeal to Pray Denied

Story: N.J. Football Coach's Appeal to Pray Denied

Everybody knows a team that prays together, stays together. (Except when they graduate and move on.) This coach asked the court for permission to say a prayer before his games, and he was rejected. Either the judge is an alumni of his rival team, or he feels that God isn't going to help him win games, but rather hard work and discipline instead.

Jesus costume gets child sent home from school

Story: Jesus costume gets child sent home from school

It wasn't so much that the costume was distracting. It wasn't even for religious reasons. The school was angered when they learned that during lunch time he was changing everyone's drinks into wine.

Texas Student Told Rosary Is 'Gang Symbol'

Story: Texas High School Student Told Rosary Is 'Gang Symbol'

If you haven't heard this story, it seems there are a bunch of Catholic teens going around forgiving people for their sins, offering repentance, and obeying the Ten Commandments. Authorities believe this gang will only offer more harm than peace. Wait a second...wasn't is Texas that approved Bible courses in high school? Let's get our hypocrisies straight before we continue to makes fools of ourselves with inexcusable punishments.

Texas approves Bible course for high schools

Story: Texas State Board of Education approves Bible course for high schools

The good news? Kids might be able to talk their parents out of Sunday School at church. The bad news? Students are going to get confused on test day when their science teacher explained to them about the theory of evolution earlier in the week. And are we going to allow every religion to have a course in high school as well? The students in this class will also be off-key during the Pledge of Allegiance when they're the only ones saying "One nation, under God." But again, on the bright side, the Ohio teacher who likes to burn crosses on kids arms might be able to get a job here.

Ohio Teacher Burns Cross on Students Arm

Story: Teacher Accused of Branding Kid With Cross

I am pretty sure this is how Jesus would have wanted it. In fact, isn't there a line in the Bible that says "Take your young disciplines and teach them my word by burning their skin with scolding hot irons." Apparently the line is blurry between teaching students Christian values and permanently branding them with images of the cross. Who would have thought?
